Millions around the world prepared for Christmas as the Associated Press reports. The year’s wars linger despite the season’s message of peace. Three explosions shook Bethlehem, possibly from supersonic aircraft, worrying observers near the birthplace of Jesus.
A Midwest and Ohio Valley snowstorm snarled travel on Christmas Eve with heavy accumulations. Chicago bore the brunt with 11 inches, O’Hare delays, and several road closures. Snow-related deaths occurred in Chicago, Iowa, and northern Illinois as other areas reported injuries and travel disruptions.

Highs from 60 to 66 degrees and sub 40 degree lows, northerly winds 6 to 16 mph, generally good drying conditions through Friday, sunshine 70 percent plus, with Selman Field Monroe noting a 60 degree high and 31 degree low no precipitation recorded.
Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot flew to Vientiane Laos to urge North Vietnamese officials to accept two jetliners carrying gifts for U S prisoners of war. Perot urged humanitarian aid and expressed optimism despite Hanoi's prior refusals.

Saigon report says U S Army surgeons saved two patients by removing live grenades from their bodies at the 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon. Lt Col Thomas H Witchi of Wading River NY leads the effort in live round surgery. The patients were an American soldier and a Vietnamese woman, with operations done behind sandbags to prevent detonation. Four earlier similar operations have been successful, all using U S made M79 grenades.
AP reports three men robbed a U S mail truck Tuesday in a theft totaling 382000 dollars. Two suspects were armed and one wore a mailman disguise. The currency, a military pouch shipment from Germany to the Treasury, was mutilated but salvageable for destruction after processing.
W. Va AP report on Deloris Simmons a 10 year old girl stricken by sleeping sickness encephalitis since Sept 28 1988. Her mother Dennis Simmons speaks of Christmas gifts still unopened and hope she will wake and speak. Donations exceed 6000 support hospital bills as doctors remain cautiously hopeful.
Saigon reports a 24 hour allied truce began on Christmas Eve while eight small enemy attacks and one Viet Cong violation occurred by Thursday. A claymore mine killed four Americans and wounded many as U S troops swept a road near Saigon. North Vietnamese forces engaged 75 miles north near the Cambodian border.
BAY Ark AP neighbors and friends raised over 1,000 dollars to send Verlin Lamberson to visit his wounded son Thomas a 20 year old Army PFC who lost a foot in Vietnam after a union donation of 200 helped cover the cost of a plane ticket to Yokohama. If his visa clears he will fly Christmas Day to see his son.
