A South Vietnamese Air Vietnam jet skidded off a runway at Nha Trang crashing into a school and homes. Initial counts listed 30 dead, with 21 on the ground and nine aboard, including about 12 schoolchildren. Twenty hurt, two American soldiers among victims. 63 passengers plus seven crew aboard.
Robert M Morgenthau resigned today as US attorney for New York s Southern District. President Nixon announced he would replace Morgenthau 50 a Democrat with former New York State Len Whitney Seymour Jr a Republican. Speculation had Morgenthau pursuing court action to challenge the President s power to remove him.
Marine Cpl Ronnie Harbour returned to service over the weekend just before Christmas and is deployed to the Naval base in San Francisco California. He previously served at Guantanamo Bay Cuba and is the son of Dewey and (Mrs) Harbour of Monroe. He finished at Ouachita Parish High School and has been in the service a year. Mr and Mrs C J Stevens celebrate their 14th anniversary today on Roland Road in Monroe.

In a separate case, David Wayne Smith, George Willard Ward, and Terry Waldrop face burglary charges for the Hideaway Bar break in on Sterlington Road. Smith is held. Ward and Waldrop posted bond. Back door entry was noted during routine patrol.
