AP reports a sweeping spy hunt in insurgent Spain may alter the civil war. About 1,000 arrests were claimed and documents seized to inform future military operations. London officials noted a British consular bag concealment tied to the case.
The state department hunts more than 1500 missing American passports in Spain. Many owners died in the Barcelona area during the civil war while fighting for the republic. Officials seek Barcelona government help to locate the documents to prevent illegal entry. The Red Cross plans 3,000,000 bushels of surplus wheat to aid Spain.
New Orleans December reports a 10 year old Hammond barber Paul Pedersen was seriously shot at his shop last night. Chief Fred Meyers said buckshot wounds to the neck came from a white suspect whom officers seek after the attack. Pedersen and his wife were taken to New Orleans by private ambulance.

Washington officials say WPA may run out by February 7 prompting leaders to plan a rapid conference with President Roosevelt on an emergency appropriation. Estimates vary from 500 to 750 million dollars with the agency already facing possible rolls cuts by January 26 and a full shutdown 12 days after.
In Omaha Nebraska three landowners challenged county tax assessments on three lots. The county board initially questioned the appeal and then found the parcels lay on shifting Missouri River sands. Tax rolls were adjusted accordingly.
State police investigate the report by Preston H. Griffith Jr. that two hitchhikers beat him and took his mother's car after he picked them up near Hammond. Griffith, son of LSU extension director, was found unconscious beside a road near Albany and treated for a cut eye.

A re-enactment is to be staged at the home where her dismembered body was burned, as detectives pursue a murder complaint. Spinelli reportedly admitted the homicide after confronting bone fragments from the incinerated remains.
In Columbus Ohio Stephen Figuli died in the electric chair at Ohio penitentiary last night for the slaying of detective Robert Cline. The 21 year old Cleveland youth was the last member of a bank robber gang that fought police in a February 4 gun battle. three gang members and Cline were killed. Figuli walked to the chair without fear as the current took effect.
A joint Roosevelt committee of railway management and labor will deliver a comprehensive report on the railroad situation this week end. Proposals cover consolidations mergers government aid and interstate commerce powers reform.

Mrs Jeanette Dent Vance wife of Norwood K. Vance prominent local abstractor dies at home. Daughter of the late Judge Wilbur P. Blackman she is mother of Julius F. Ariall Rapides clerk of court. Survived by three daughters and a sister. Funeral set for 11 tomorrow morning.
In Tunkhannock Pennsylvania state troopers ferried into a snowbound countryside to chase a suspect believed to have strangled 19 year old Margaret Martin and dumped her nude body in a creek. Autopsy confirms murder by strangulation with abdominal slashing.

An exiled financier Philip Mussen also known as Cotter Musica claims he was victim of Wall Street plunderers. He asserts bankers lawyers and appraisers caused the collapse and his own ruin while denying any personal wrongdoing. He states he did not ruin the company or stockholders and laments a treacherous legal fight. The note, released by attorney Sam Reich, was found with his papers the night before his death.
In Crieff Scotland on December 2 Duchess of Atholl, who opposed Chamberlain's foreign policy, lost by 313 votes in a parliamentary by election. Full returns showed the duchess had previously carried the district for the Conservative party by 51 votes in 1935. Snadden, a 42 year old farmer, said the result would be a vote of confidence for Chamberlain and a sign the Scottish people favor his plan for peace in Europe.
