Atlanta December 22 Associated Press reports Lambdin Kay announcer for WSB has married Mrs Lucile Phillips who is not a radio fan and has no receiving set in her home.
Frank G. Menke previews two newspaper sports pieces on Tug Wilson known as Joe Collins, lauded as a shrewd and golden harvest figure among gladiators sent from England. The News-Star will print Friday and Saturday with Menke praised as a leading American sports writer.
Mary Jackson named honorary commander of the R C T C at Ripon College by unanimous vote. She will read the grand march at Ripon’s cadet frolic in January.
Poll tax receipts run slow this week with 4480 collected by last night and about 2600 still due in eight days. Officials anticipate long lines at the sheriff’s office as last minute payments push toward the December 31 deadline. The office will stay open at noon to speed up settlements.
In Atlantic City on December 22, Mr and Mrs Robert Delaney aged 16 years of marriage filed a court agreement renouncing all claims upon each other for life and agreeing not to disturb their friendship. They reject divorce. Mrs Delaney aims for a policewoman role while her husband works as a salesman.
The Rev. Christopher Cook, 103, longtime parish priest in Monmouthshire, died after a fall on a frozen path during a severe cold spell. He served 75 years in the scattered parish.
Newark N J December 22 Station WOR will try broadcasting pictures to radio set owners soon after the new year. The move aims to combine radio with visual content, expanding home entertainment options.
F W Updegraff 46 a construction engineer in charge of a compressor station erection for Interstate Natural Gas company was seriously injured in an automobile crash 17 miles north of Baton Rouge. His wife, driving, was badly shaken as the car went over a steep embankment and turned turtle. They were rushed to a Baton Rouge hospital.
Mrs Evangeline Lindbergh left Tampico on the final leg of her Detroit to Mexico City flight to spend Christmas with her son. She was reported reaching Tampico and was expected to land at Valbuena field later in the day as communications tracked her progress.
Mrs Evangeline L Lindbergh resumed her Detroit to Mexico City flight from Brownsville at 8 30 am. Pilot Harry Brooks said heavy Gulf clouds could force very low flying, delaying the final leg to Tampico and Mexico City until tomorrow if conditions persist.
Mrs Lindbergh and party reached Brownsville after a night flight along the gulf coast while Col Lindbergh pushed on in a 2000 mile nonstop from Washington to reach Mexico City for Christmas. Pilot Harry Brooks completed 715 miles from Tulsa in three hops as part of the cross country journey that mirrored earlier Detroit to St Louis to Tulsa legs.
Alice Ash 16 daughter of Clarence H Ash a Clinton Louisiana grocer eloped with Lucien Duras 21 of Arabi. Police found them and learned Cupid caused the disappearance not a kidnaping. They went to Magnolia Mississippi for a marriage license and wed at Osaka Mississippi. They stayed with friends then returned to New Orleans.
George Remus former bootlegger king remains jailed as probate court schedules a Wednesday sanity hearing on whether he is sane after being acquitted of murder. Judge Lueders will decide if Remus now qualifies for release or must be sent to the state hospital for the criminally insane. Prosecutor Taft Jr argues he was sane at trial while Remus relies on prior alienist findings to seek freedom.
Twelve jurors who found George Remus not guilty on the ground of insanity signed a petition for an immediate sanity hearing or bail admission. Remus, jailed, planned to file with Probate Judge Wm. Lue ders, who set December 28 for the mental condition hearing but denied bond. The judge ordered Remus kept in jail, presuming insanity at shooting and until proven sane.
In a New York opinion of Dr. Roach Straton he says three men are worthy of the U S presidency Will Rogers and Henry Ford and the third should remain unnamed due to modesty.
President Coolidge signed a deficiency appropriation bill totaling just over 200 million dollars to fund various government activities and to start the five year public building program. In the Caribbean, the Venezuelan schooner Veinte Julio sank after a collision with the American steamer Merida near Aruba, resulting in several drownings and two bodies recovered.
Sidney Barnes a 51 year old known as the human ostrich died after surgery to remove a cigar box of bolts nails razor blades and washers from his stomach. He spent 27 years swallowing hardware as part of circus and carnival stunts.
Mrs. C. E. Kohal of Brandon is jailed in Baton Rouge charged with shooting with intent to murder her husband. Sheriff Wilcox of West Feliciana says the shooting followed a quarrel after Kohal reprimanded a child. Kohal claims it was accidental. Kohal is seriously injured with a lung-piercing bullet.
In a Rome consistory on December 22, Pope Pius XI raised Cardinal August Hlond, archbishop of Posem and primate of Poland, to the red hat. The ceremony drew Roman church dignitaries, the pontifical court, and the diplomatic corps. Also named titular cardinals Lephcier of Tarsus for St Susannah in Rome and Rouleau, archbishop of Quebec, for St Peter in Montorio.
In New York on December Dee 22 a Russian engineer Leo Theremin aged 81 visits to show a device that creates musical tones by hand movement over an antenna. The nearer his hands to the instrument the higher the pitch, notes resembling a cello or flute emerge.
Chicago crowds line up daily for food relief as cold, unemployment, and scarce jobs press the jobless. Salvation Army Captain Fred T. Wilks reports crowds of 504, 480, and 400 daily, with 150 in family relief. A new flop house offers 164 square feet of shelter and a kitchen for morning soup.
The Good Fellows fund in Monroe and West Monroe trails 1926 totals as the city grows and more children need aid for a Christmas feast. Cars driven by Murray Swan of Ouachita Candy Co and Newton Knowles Jr collided at the intersection of North Second and DeSiard Streets yesterday at 6 08 p m. The head lights on Knowles car were broken while Swan’s car escaped undamaged. Swan said he stopped short to avoid a young lady who stepped from behind a street car and Knowles rear collided.
The Jefferson Parish police jury approved a franchise for Ford, Bacon and Davis, Inc. to lay a natural gas pipe line under roadways and a telephone line over them on the east bank. The route follows the Louisiana Railway and Navigation Company right of way from Destrehan to New Orleans. The grantees posted bond to insure road and ditch repairs.
