In Cleveland on December 21 the Sheppard wife murder jury entered a fifth day of deliberations in the Samuel H. Sheppard case. The panel, housed at a hotel, planned to reach a verdict imminently with claims of no rancor among jurors.
In Houston a lone gunman robbed LaRose Cleaners of about 100 dollars then forced customer Thelma Hipp and bystander Vernice Allen to flee with him. He shot Mrs. Gladys Swan in the back as she tried to intervene, leaving her in critical condition. Police searched for the suspect.
In St Ann's Mississippi the first precinct reports an 11 to 1 vote supporting a constitutional amendment allowing the Legislature to abolish public schools to preserve segregation. The measure faces a statewide vote with polls open 7 or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST. Supporters argue the loss harms no essential public function, while opponents warn of sweeping consequences for education and civil rights.

Pearce commissioner of agriculture calls the gathering for police jury representatives to discuss hardship cases in the parish. Montgomery received the invitation Tuesday by telegram.
BERLIN AP a beautiful German brunette was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to seducing secrets from two US intelligence officers for Russian pay. The woman, Irmgard Margarethe Schmidt 24, admitted transmitting details of Allied defense orders in West Berlin and seeking more information. She sobbed as Judge Ambrose Fuller pronounced sentence and denied a third charge about the network of American agents.
In Vienna the allied council held an extraordinary session as the Soviet Union charged the United States with violating the Austria control agreement by sending troops into the Tyrol French zone. The U S Britain and France denied the charge and said the move was for traffic duties near Innsbruck.

Sen. Estes Kefauver pressed for a clear rationale behind a 403000-man reduction in U.S. armed forces over 18 months. Defense Secretary Wilson cited Eisenhower’s orders to shift focus to air power and continental defenses, with Marine and Army units rebalanced and overall manpower dropping from 3,218,000 to 2,815,000 by mid-1956.

Screenwriter and novelist James Hilton died last night at Seaside Hospital after a long illness. He was 54 and had lived in Long Beach for 10 years while working in films. Hilton, born September 9 1900 in Leigh England, had battled liver cancer for years and was cared for by his former wife Alice at his bedside.
