The students, freed from classes, fill mail duties and are paid 65 cents an hour plus 10 percent for night hours.
Washington reports the 17 eastern states’ ban on noncommercial gasoline sales ends at midnight. The A, B, and C coupon values shift, with B and C cut to three gallons and A remaining at three. Officials plan a full situational canvass with Henderson Ickes Eastman.
Washington reports more than 10 billion dollars in loans subscribed this month amid a war bond drive that is expected to reach 11 billion by month’s end. Treasury Secretary Morgenthau praised the public response, noting strong demand from investors beyond banks and calling the results the greatest borrowing period in U S history.
London dispatch reports a joint RAF and American daylight followed by a nighttime assault on Duisburg at the Rhine Ruhr junction. The air ministry says heavy concentrated bombing left large fires while intruder operations over France targeted railway engines and other objectives. Eleven planes reported lost, signaling a sizable force, marking the 52nd Duisburg attack since the war began and the fifth nocturnal raid this month.
Attorney General Biddle announced the indictment of Anaconda Wire and Cable of Marion Indiana. The case charges conspiracy to defraud the government and produce defective wire for orders totaling about six million dollars. Some wire reached Russia prompting a Soviet complaint while the army limited such wire to maneuvers not combat. The indictment names the company and five officers, returned at Fort Wayne.

British Eighth Army patrols clash with Axis detachments near Sultan 140 miles west of El Agheila as Rommel's forces retreat along the Libyan coast between Sirte and Buerat El Hsun. Luftwaffe fighter-bombers strike Rommel's transport and concentrations, with vanguards reportedly within 19 miles of Sirte.
Police investigate a mysterious knife attack in which two elderly women were attacked in their apartment. One survivor, 65 year old Jessie Hamilton, reports that Miss Ann Dreyfus, 83, was fatally stabbed and a fire was started. Diamonds worn by Hamilton are missing and a diary suggests Dreyfus held wealth.
The Axia moves forces from Tripoli to Tunisia after a two day Hitler conference. Rommel's African corps and Mussolini's legions may abandon Tripolitania to concentrate for Tunis. Allied reports say Italians in Tripoli attempt link with Tunisian forces and a 150 ship convoy is readied in French ports.
In Houston Texas on December 21 a patriotic carnival marks a 70 million dollar pledge to replace the lost cruiser Houston. Frank Knox Jesse Jones Sam Rayburn and Texas Governor join as war bonds fund a new cruiser with potential for extra destroyers. The James Madison Liberty ship launched at dawn as Knox and Jones inspect Brown Shipbuilding.
Investigators withheld autopsy findings on Benjamin G. Brinkmann and George S. Sedano after both were recovered from the sea a week after a fishing trip aboard Brinkmann’s B. G. B. Their bodies showed a left temple wound on Brinkmann.
New Orleans Dec 21 Fire marshal Campbell Palfrey announced he sent Deputy Amos Smelser to Alexandria at the request of city authorities to inspect and remove fire hazards in clubs mainly used by soldiers. Palfrey noted the survey aims to be completed before Christmas and that New Orleans police are rechecking club entrances and decorations to eliminate fire hazards after recent deadly fires affecting service members.
