Illinois man Anthony J. Scherer Jr. sued the government for 100000 over a 1964 overnight stay by President Johnson near his Des Plaines home. He claimed federal agents barred him from remaining at his residence about 300 yards from the sleeping site. The Justice Department argued Scherer could stay if he surrendered temporary custody of his firearms.
Charles Brelsford McCoy is named president and chief executive of Du Pont, becoming only the second non-Du Pont to head the firm. Born in Oakland, California, he rose from cellophane production to the top job over 35 years, succeeding Lammot Copeland who becomes chairman. McCoy, 58, holds degrees from the University of Virginia and MIT.
Jackie W. Grider 25, a bakery employee, is charged with the knife murder of Baylor University coed Jill Brown 19. Grider was held without bond. detectives pursued their own theory amid law enforcement opinions. Brown's nude body was found in a city park December 10 after an abduction from a shopping center on December 8.
Government economists say the November data indicate a robust U S economy expanding despite recent strikes. Personal income rose 5.8 billion to a record annual pace 641.7 billion housing starts up 4.7 percent to 1 556 000 units highest since December 1965 and the trend supports another push for a 10 percent income tax surcharge before the House Ways and Means Committee.
Tamworth town council rejected a proposed city coat of arms due to mermaid imagery. One councilor called the mermaids voluptuous, but officials said the decision was because Tamworth lies 70 miles from the sea and mermaids would be inappropriate.
