A wholesale fireworks store exploded in West Monroe early Tuesday, blasting three buildings and damaging homes and businesses in the 1500 block of Cypress Street. No serious injuries. several people treated for lacerations and bruises as windows, shelves, and cars were damaged. The first blast occurred about 9 20 am and fireworks continued for about 30 minutes.
A B-29 Superfortress crashed while landing at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport Louisiana killing four crew members. Eight airmen were injured three seriously and one missing. The plane struck a single story home demolishing it and causing power and gas lines to fail. Rescue workers transported injured crew to the base hospital.
The E A Conway Memorial Hospital awarded a $334 884 contract to W C Salley of Monroe as the low bidder for a new maternity ward with total project cost of about 375 000 including equipment landscaping and architect fees The original appropriation was 300 000 Gov Earl K Long secured additional funds from another source Plans by the Monroe firm Smith and Co continue on the second page.
The Frost Lumber Industries stockholders meeting to vote on transferring assets to Olin Industries in a merger has been postponed to January 15. Frank T. Whited Jr. announced the meeting will only decide on fixing the new date.
Dr William L Bendel Jr of Monroe has been named chief resident physician of thoracic surgery at the Tulane section of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He is a Neville High School and Tulane graduate, married to Marguerite Butler with a daughter Susan, and will complete his senior residency next year.
CIO United Steel Workers press for 15 cent hourly raise and concessions, warning a strike could begin New Year’s day and threaten the nation’s price and wage controls. Government allies seek talks with ten major steel firms to avert December 3 or January 3 action as wage ceilings loom.
A small, shifty eyed man named George Ross 27 sat behind bars awaiting transport to Cleveland for the murder he admits. He was picked up south of Baltimore by Edward Duvall after hitchhiking, armed but surrendered without a fight. Ross is wanted for the December 8 murder of Traffic Patrolman Haas in a Cleveland rooming house. U S Commissioner Ernst Volkart ordered Ross held on 30000 bond and arraignment continued until federal authorities arrive with a warrant for unlawful flight to escape prosecution.
The Communists turned over to the United Nations a list of 11 559 prisoners including 3 198 Americans. The UN gave the Reds 132 474 Chinese and North Korean prisoners. Gen Matthew Ridgway’s Tokyo HQ said the list likely includes Maj Gen William F Dean missing since Taejon’s fall in July 1950.
A U N command spokesman said Reds hold 3,198 Allied prisoners in eleven camps between Pyongyang and Sinuiju. Americans are in four camps near the border with details naming Camp Nos. 1 2 3 5 near Changsong Pyotong and the Yalu river.
The Traffic and Transportation Club of Monroe West organizes a fundraiser totaling 1877.75 dollars with contributions from Jean and Peggy Strauss, John Glass Green, Brownie Troop No. 39, and memorial gifts for Mrs. Harper and Judge Taliaferro. James A. Noe donates use of a building for the project.
Husky Bob Starr a 23 year old father of two was expelled from Memphis State College not for pranks or poor grades but for overextension. He enrolled at both Memphis State and Southwestern College, wrote sports for two papers, edited college yearbooks, penned a novel outline, and worked 48 hours weekly at an ice cream plant while attending classes. He attributes the schedule to his wife Norma and his motorcycle and plans to seek a calmer routine after leaving Memphis State.
