Three men died and a fourth injured when a southbound Central of Georgia passenger train hit a crossing automobile near Macon Georgia. The engineer Robert G. Ferrell and fireman Joe White, both Macon residents, were killed, and Private Robert R. Packard of Cochran Field died in the burning car.
An army bomber crashed after takeoff from Lambert-St. Louis airport killing seven crewmen and injuring two. Names released include Second Lieutenants Stanley Rosen and William McDonald and others from New Jersey California and Arizona. Vincent Regan and Alex Miller, Staten Island residents and coast guardsmen, pleaded innocent in federal court to charges they attacked seven girls on U S property. Bail set at 25000 and 5000. If convicted they face possible death penalty under federal law. The case arose after a clergyman protested. FBI agent Edward Stiles filed the complaint.

Fairfield Utah Dec 16 A doughty 23 year old leatherneck rode out a Western Airlines crash that killed 17 and left a second survivor alive. Lieutenant A F Gardner of Alexander NY US Marine Corps survived with a bruised face and nearly froze to death. A J Mallett of Springfield Ark was the other survivor severely injured. Four women including Stewardess Cleo Booth Los Angeles two military officers eight other men and three crew members died. The pilot sought an emergency field near Fairfield four miles away as the plane headed north.
Louisiana's 2,800 Angola penitentiary inmates will get a four day Christmas vacation, a dollar dividend from the inmate store, and turkey for Christmas dinner. Ward en Dennis D. Bazer reports sugar production reached 12 million pounds with a humane regimen, noting no corporeal punishment and record cane harvests from 3,200 acres.

United States bombers raided Buin on Bougainville in the Solomons and met no enemy opposition. The attacks also targeted Munda airfield on New Guinea and Guadalcanal machine gun positions, with two gun crews killed.

Gloucester Point Va December 16 state police reported several men drowned when a bus carrying white and negro workers plunged from a ferry into York river. C D Burke of the Gloucester Yorktown Ferry said 25 occupants were rescued but exact numbers aboard were not yet known. The driver Robert E Paul of Mathews county was among those pulled from the icy water and the bus was later raised found empty. Rescued workers suffered only minor cuts and were sent home after first aid at the navy mine hospital.
Allied air forces and British Eighth Army press the pursuit west of El Agheila, blasting Rommel's retreat convoys on the Tripoli road. Reports say heavy daylight and night bombardment wrecks litter the route, with ground forces racing to exploit the breakthrough and push toward Zauta en Nafilia.
Delayed dispatch from Martiin Spencer reports American doughboys seized Buna village in New Guinea less than two hours after assault began. The village, battered by weeks of bombing, saw negligible American casualties. Buna’s fall eases pressure on the American left flank as operations continue nearby.
