Rainy spell continues with 7.56 inches recorded since December 4 at Selman Field FAA. Farmers face halted cotton-gathering and quality losses, while no major weather change is expected through Saturday. Daily totals show a peak 3.20 inches on the 9th and 1.88 inches on the 11th.
In a quiet night at Camp Kiroli J. W. Webster, former president of the Quachita Valley Boy Scout Council, led the presentation ceremonies. The two Scouts are from Troop 10 in West Monroe, sponsored by the West Monroe Lions Club with Amos Hood serving as Scoutmaster.
Washington AP An agency of the Roman Catholic Church released a legal study arguing that federal grants for secular education in parochial schools are constitutional under several Supreme Court rulings. The NCWC asserts four key points, including government support for the secular function of church-related education and a constitutional right for families to choose such schools.

Mrs. John E. Lewis, 84, long illness, died in McCrory Arkansas. Funeral Friday in McCrory. She was mother of John G. nae and grandmother of Marion D. Lewis of Monroe. Survived by five sisters in Arkansas and Oklahoma and two other sons Angus Lewis of San Antonio Texas and Gilbert Lewis of Pasadena Texas.
The federal civil defense program, to be sent to Congress next month, would cost about 700 million and offer incentive payments for fallout shelters in schools, hospitals, and public welfare institutions. Deputy Secretary Roswell Gilpatric announced details, with no money for home shelters. The plan targets shelter spaces for about 20 million people next year, starting July 1, and projects begun after January 1 would be eligible for incentives.
A man who once lived in Evansville Indiana shot twice and fled to a telephone. Police found him later at the Gupton home where he had sought shelter to testify in a theft case involving his car. Officers reported no clear motive and described him as berserk.
Weaver E. Gore, 81, longtime attorney and former Mississippi legislator active in the Democratic party, died Wednesday night. He practiced with his son in Gore and Gore and left a widow, son, three daughters, two brothers, and four sisters as survivors.
Twenty children and several adults affected by a collision as a bus approached a railroad crossing. Parents rushed to comfort grieving families while a doctor treated shock. Officials shielded the bus driver for safety. no charges filed at this time. A Union Pacific fireman reported the bus slowed then sped onto the crossing.
Hampton a Lake Providence resident was jailed in East Carroll Parish charged with murder in the Monday night death of J. P. Vertner 40 of Dermott Arkansas. Vertner died from a .32 caliber pistol shot after an argument at the home of Marie Brown a plantation maid. Vertner reportedly drew a knife on Hampton.
