Washington reports that President Truman held a White House briefing with key banking and economic leaders urging swift wage and price controls amid the crisis. Senate and House figures from both parties pressed for national emergency measures while stressing rapid military buildup.
Westbrook Pegler recalls James Kevin McGuinness, a Hollywood writer who died of a heart attack after years of fighting anti communism pressure. Pegler notes McGuinness testified in Washington in 1947 on industry treachery and faced industry hostility while colleagues thrived.
Lawrence B. Pettit and A. B. Clarkson were appointed as civil defense directors for Monroe and Ouachita parish, replacing acting leaders Lt. Gov. William Dodd had named. Mayor John Coon and A. E. Montgomery supported the new hires while George Tidwell urged public backing to ensure full protection and capable staffing for the defense program.
Mrs. Taunton Veazey of the Twin Cities American Red Cross appeals for gifts for wounded and ill servicemen at the Alexandria Veterans Hospital. More than 500 men await the annual visit, with Monroe Day planned for this Sunday, but only about 100 gifts have been received so far.
Capt William A Stephens of the Northeastern military department will receive special recognition Friday at 11:30 a.m. as the ROT C parades to honor him. He will transfer to John McNeese College Lake Charles, which has just converted to a four year institution and will offer an advanced ROT C course in infantry. The transfer is set for early January 1951, with Capt Stephens and President Lewis Slater reviewing the cadet corps.
A crippling railway yard workers strike spread from Chicago to Washington St Louis and Baltimore disrupting terminals and freight. The army threatened contempt action if workers do not end the wildcat walkout which the court says interferes with the war effort.
Washington reports the Communist air force may be entering an all-out campaign as MiG-15s and other jets engage U N forces. A Pentagon briefing notes rising jet activity, with 24 MiG-15s and four shooting stars seen near Sinuiju. UN air sorties exceed 100,000, dwarfing Communist efforts to date.
The Good Fellows drive near its end with total donations of 1184.05 including gifts from the Saturday Afternoon Club Joan Thompson Kathleen and Susan Cochran and others. Organizers note needs are greater than funds this year and urge more support to help the hungry and destitute before distribution of food and clothing next week.
Monroe police reported burglars hit two businesses on Wednesday night. The Rendezvous at 1400 Louisville avenue and Snow White Cleaners at 2215 DeLiard were entered by breaking windows and a door, respectively. Officers noted a missing stash including whiskey, cash, and tax money labeled boxes. fingerprints were found at Snow White Cleaners. The Rendezvous alarm was nonfunctional and about 350 dollars in cash from a sack and checks, coins, and tax money boxes were taken.
California's civilian defense chief Maj. Gen. W. M. Robertson urges backyard bomb shelters for the San Francisco Bay Area's 2,766,000 residents. He cites the 1941 Pearl Harbor parallel and proposes England style shelters, $100 each, plus designation of industrial buildings as shelters and underground garages. In San Francisco the parking authority hires Ramp Building Corp to plan a bomb proof garage under civic center plaza.
Washington reports the government faces heavy defense costs and launches its biggest tax harvest season. Officials expect at least 16 billion dollars in revenue over three months, with corporate taxes at 45 percent on 1950 profits and individual payments due by March 15. January 1 brings new withholding rules for social security and servant taxes.
The seventh and likely final Twin Cities Community Chest report meeting will be held Friday at noon in the Cameo Room of the Virginia Hotel. W L Ethridge and Co-Chairman Joe G Durrett urge rapid completion of the $63 000 1951 fund campaign, noting less than $2 000 remains to reach the goal. Washington December 14 top atomic leaders were summoned to the White House amid reports Truman may order controls over vital materials for the expanding A bomb program. Attending were senate and house banking committee chairmen and ranking members with Gordon Dean, McMahon and Elston representing the atomic program. The talks followed McMahon urging quick approval of a $1 050 000 000 request to advance the expansion plan, including uranium stock increases and new plants, with potential site moves and Oak Ridge Hanford and Los Alamos facilities already funded.
Washington reports the post office department weighing a partial embargo on parcel post mailings as railroad yard workers strike spreads. Assistant Postmaster General John M. Redding said offices may stop accepting package mail for transcontinental routes and north south movement within hours.
Tom Wafer 38 dispatcher for Arkansas Fuel Gas at Sterlington was found dead in the company club house. Coroner Dr. J T French labeled it suicide, citing a self inflicted gunshot wound through the right temple and a note to his wife detailing financial ruin. Wafer was last seen mid Wednesday afternoon after borrowing matches, with his car left at the club house.
