London Dec 14 The RAF Mosquito raid last night hit western Germany for the fourth straight night, while US Liberators and Flying Fortresses joined daylight raids. American airmen report 15 German fighters shot down, bringing this month’s total to 187, with bomber gunners downing fourteen of the victims. The Eighth Air Force notes 237 enemy planes destroyed in 15 missions since October 2, as Thunderbolts and Lightnings escort bombers on long missions amid heavy losses on both sides.
Washington officials outline changes in deferment reviews under the new select service law. Appeal boards in DC will judge registrants whose principal place of employment lies outside local boards, with thousands affected by the order.
Lieutenant General George S. Patton Jr. arrives in Cairo with a staff, fueling talk of new Middle East commands. Louisiana legislators push to keep soldier voting under state control, arguing a local system better handles residency and qualifications for service members’ ballots.
The OPA outlines a token based change system to begin February 27 1944 with tokens issued to retailers by February 2 1944. Two billion tokens in process blue tokens for processed foods and red tokens for meats and fats will be used with monthly and biweekly validity schedules.
Chines e high command announced recapture of Linli 25 miles north of Changteh and Shihmen 46 miles northwest, with a Japanese detachment south of Shihmen surrounded. Dispatches say Chinese pursues aimed to trap Japanese south of the Li river as air offensives against Pacific bases continue.
London December 14 The Ankara radio quoted Ulus that Turkey is in reality one of the United Nations contributing to the war effort and civilization. The paper said Turkey’s position was strengthened by recent talks between Ismet Inönü, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill, noting Turkey is not neutral in fact though legally neutral.
The Good Fellows fund appeals for donations as time runs out. Only about 55 dollars in three days leaves a deficit of around 1,200 dollars, with residents urged to send contributions to the News-Star-World office for Christmas aid to the needy.
The senate finance committee voted to freeze social security taxes at 1 percent for both employers and employees through 1944. Senator Vandenberg argued that current reserves are more than legally required. The panel also backed unions filing informational returns, raised the corporate excess profits tax to 95 percent, and kept the overall 3 cent ceiling on corporate taxes.
Senator Butler charges the United States spent over six billion dollars on a neighbor policy in South America and vows to present independent proof. In Bath New York on December 14 a bus carrying eleven workers to the Ingersoll Rand plant at Painted Post collided with a trailer truck. The bus overturned and caught fire. At least eight others were injured, one critically. Coroner James J Sanford said four victims could not be readily identified due to burns.
Madrid December 14 A neutral physician arriving from Berlin says Germany faces an influenza and grippe epidemic comparable to Britain. He notes Rhineland and Prussia see many cases and Berlin authorities prepare for the spread amid bombings.
Foreign Secretary Eden tells the House that Teheran and Cairo decisions with Roosevelt Stalin and Churchill will shorten the war and deny Japan a peace path. He notes Turkey inquiries show hope for postwar cooperation with the US USSR and Britain.
Allied reports say Indian troops pierced German lines in the center of the British Eighth army front in Italy and captured prisoners while Canadians repelled Nazi armored attacks along the Adriatic. Fifth army activity was mainly artillery duels and patrols with tanks knocked out in counterattacks.
Dr Verne Carlton Hunt a 34 year old surgeon was shot to death in his office by a man who then killed himself. The killer Ephrem Mounsey 69 a retired real estate dealer allegedly brooded over a recurring ailment and demanded medical operation. Detective Lt Roy Vaughan confirmed the double fatal shooting and suicide.
Moscow broadcast the capture of Cherkasy, a key Dnieper port between Kremenchug and Kiev, as General Vatutin's First Ukrainian Army pressed west of Kiev. German counterattacks were repelled with costly losses, aiding a junction with southern forces.
Dr. Simeon LeRoy says carbon monoxide and soot in Miss Patricia Winters body suggest she may have been alive when the Greenville High senior’s car burned. State police note “mysterious angles” include a copper wire found near her neck and the victim’s companion, 16 year old David Filgas, who survived with burns and is under guard as investigators examine the scene and evidence.
A frigid Arctic air mass moves south from the northern states into the Midwest and plains. Temperatures drop to as low as five below zero in parts of the Midwest while Duluth and Minnesota report record subzero readings. The cold front extends toward Chicago and the Ohio Valley as subzero weather persists in Wisconsin Iowa the Dakotas and Michigan with a 67 above in Key West noted as a contrast.
