Elmo C. Rice a crippled Columbus real estate salesman was found shot to death on a bridge northwest of Columbus. A general search was issued for a tall middle aged man with a black mustache. Rice's car was found abandoned near the central police station with blood on the back seat. The body showed a bullet wound to the head and a throat gash. Mrs. Rice said a prospective buyer who arrived by taxi after a telephoned appointment left with Rice for a spin on their 1947 car and would pay cash if satisfied. A loaded revolver was found in the car. Coroner said the neck wound could be from being thrown from a speeding car against bridge lattice work.
British troops seal the gates of Jerusalem's old walled city as Arab Jewish clashes surge. Hundreds flee in army trucks, with fatalities rising to 134 in Palestine and 246 in the Middle East. Synagogue seizure and flag raising cited as trigger amid ongoing street battles.

Judge Robert F. Kennon and four other members of the 100 per cent veterans ticket visited Monroe to drum up support for Kennon for governor at Central Grammar School. The group, arriving with Kennon at 8 a.m., included Jules H. Deshotels Jr, J David McNeill, Rufus Fontenot, and Allison Kolb, who are running for lieutenant governor attorney general secretary of state and state auditor respectively.
