New York December 11. The German radio disclosed two little known officers as chief of staff in the air force and navy. Colonel Hans Jesschonnek and Admiral Fricke reportedly rose to high posts under Hitler. The broadcast gave few details and did not mention first names for Fricke.
In a national security tribunal in Rio de Janeiro a 14 year sentence was handed to Edmondo Di Robilani and five aides for conspiring with axis powers. Count Di Robilani’s ally Di Vicino received 20 years while three others got 14 years and eight years. One defendant was acquitted. The case involved sending radio information on allied shipping and pro axis spying.

Primo Carnera, former world heavyweight champion, is credited with saving actress Egilda Cechini from a constricting boa during a stage scene in Rome. Carnera held the title after beating Jack Sharkey in 1933 and lost it to Max Baer in 1934.
Ensign Jefferson H. Carroum of Smackover Arkansas, after 73 hours adrift in a life jacket, reaches a Pacific island where native girls greet him. He survived a bomber crash near Guadalcanal where the transport sunk and his rear gunner is missing. He is one of the navy's smallest pilots, at five four.
United States forces press the Buna front with punishing artillery on Japanese beach positions after repelling a night counterattack. Australian patrols advance toward Cape Killerton as Gona area falls, with air support from Allied forces striking Buna to Cape Endaradere and Soputa held ruins.
Allied forces beat back a German Italian tank and infantry attack near Medjez El Bab twenty miles southwest of Tebourba. French units fought alongside, while Axis losses were heavier than Allied losses. The action followed a broader Tunisian push as American and British forces contend with enemy reinforcements.

New York state welfare commissioner David C. Adie states private charity is vitally needed in wartime. He says public and private efforts sustain civilian morale and meet needs for food and shelter, while private groups cover gaps where public relief does not reach.
President Roosevelt told Congress that by month’s end U S forces overseas will exceed 1 000 000 and that Axis powers have temporarily lost the initiative. Lend-lease aid for the latest quarter totaled 2 367 000 000, more than a third higher than the previous quarter. The president noted Soviet offensive at Stalingrad and Allied actions from Egypt and North Africa as the war shifts in favor of the United Nations.
