In Algiers thousands protested De Gaulle arrival for Algeria home rule. Army tanks backed by troops and riot police crushed barricades as crowds clashed with security forces. About 100 injured. debris littered downtown as tear gas drove rioters into side streets.
Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold acted urgently to prevent mass reprisals against Belgians by Lumumba supporters. He ordered a full report from Rajeshwar Dayal and convened the 18 nation Congo advisory committee as Stanleyville officials threatened to arrest Belgians and deport whites unless Lumumba is freed within 48 hours. The Security Council met to discuss the Congo crisis amid claims of Soviet and Western meddling.
In Vientiane, red kerchiefed paratroops led by Capt Kong Le regained control after a predawn coup, while neutralist Premier Prince Souvanna Phouma remained in his palace. Four Negro students attended Frantz, including Ruby Nell Bridges. no white pupils joined McDonogh 19. SOS volunteers had asked for marshals as threats rose.
