Lt Col Charles A House veteran of Ashau battles in Viet Nam faces mandatory retirement after being passed over for promotion to colonel. Chicago Officials Probe Derailing of Railway Cars
Chicago Transit Authority officials continued to probe the derailment on the South Side express at Indiana Avenue station. A 49 year old man, William Mc Cullough, died and 25 were injured, with four hospitalized. Chief George De Ment cited possible foreign material on the track. others speculated a derailment earlier or switch intersection contact. Sheppard Says He Would Have Fired On Courtroom Exit

Police report a Park Avenue burglary where thieves fled with jewels valued at 100000 dollars from Shirley Maytag's seventh floor apartment. The loss includes a 12000 dollar diamond and pearl necklace a 15000 dollar nine carat diamond ring a 4000 dollar three carat diamond ring and a 3000 dollar diamond and pearl bracelet.
