A janitor heard a voice in a county jail cell hours before midnight asking when he would be jailed. Investigators found a man serving a three month sentence long ago in a forgotten cell without food or water.
Fort Logan staff sergeant Frank Martz is jailed on murder charges in the death of Kathleen Ann Get, a three year old girl found raped and strangled in his Denver apartment after he lured her from a tavern with a plush rabbit. The motherAnn Gent reported the disappearance. police tracked Martz to his home where he was found partly dressed.
In Harrisburg Pennsylvania debates Roosevelt for a possible fourth term test in the April presidential primary. Democratic State Chairman Davide L. Lawrence says Roosevelt will be entered by supporters though delegates remain unbound. State Committee Secretary J. Warren Mickle says the move aims to signal broad support to national delegates. Republican leaders claim no plan to enter candidates. GOP hopes an uninstructed delegation will emerge at the convention. Lawrence counters that GOP claims have echoed false predictions in 1936 and 1940.
Ankara already pledges closest unity with Britain and the United States as the Cairo conference on Inonu and Menemencioglu reports fuels expectations of a strong Turkish declaration. Officials note Turkey may align to counter Hitler’s Balkan satellites with decisive actions forthcoming from parliament.
Allied Fifth Army bate the Nazis from Monastery ridge and summit of Mt Camino while pushing toward Cassino. Lt Gen Mark Clark reports gains across Mt Camino and Mt Maggiore as Eighth Army advances along the Moro river coast under Montgomery. German resistance slows progress with heavy artillery and counterattacks, leaving scattered Allied gains and ruined villages.
The agriculture department reports this year's cotton crop at 1 478 000 bales of 30 pounds gross weight, down from 12 817 000 a year ago and 1 244 000 in the 1932-34 ten year average. Linn county totals to December 1 run at 19 559 889 running bales versus 11 534 762 last year. Area harvested stands at 21 474 000 acres, down from 22 602 000 last year, with a yield of 252.0 pounds per acre compared with 272.4 pounds last year and 217.0 pounds in the 1932-34 average. Missouri area figures list 386 000 acres with corresponding yields and production.
AB C Railway trainmen delay walkout set for 1 pm central war time tonight after request from the National Railway Mediation board. Brotherhood vice president E E Oster said Robert E Cole of the board would arrive in Atlanta and the strike could be restated if no settlement is reached. The walkout aimed to protest a four cent an hour wage increase while the line serves two ordnance plants and many towns in Georgia and Alabama rely on its service.
In a New York talk Governor Thomas Dewey is “the outstanding possibility” for the Republican nomination. Alf Landon, planning talks with Herbert Hoover, said he sees Dewey as the leading candidate and does not commit to supporting him yet. Moscow reports heavy German pressure near Kiev with Soviet gains southwest of Krementchug and near Znamenka as the front lines shift amid the seven week battle for the Kiev bulge.
Republicans captured Meriden and Rockville mayoralties and claimed a broader trend. Meriden’s Francis R. Danaher became the city’s first four term mayor, defeating Peter W. Skladzien 9289 to 4836. Rockville’s Raymond E. Hunt won a second term over Richard G. Bundy 1219 to 838. They also took Willimantic and Putnam, with Hartford’s mayoral race signaling a statewide GOP surge.
Allied reports say Rabaul remains tenable for Japan as naval activity drops and air bases show more fighters. MacArthur spokesman notes reduced naval traffic while bomber fleets deliver heavy strikes on New Britain. Farther south, Wareo on the Huon peninsula sees static ground fighting with Australian support pressing a push toward Bougainville.
Major General L H Campbell Jr asserts the development of Flying Artillery makes the American airplane the most formidable air weapon. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 10 to 1 to kill bills authorizing government funded newspaper advertising for war bonds. Chairman Doughter said the action blocks the legislation this session, with a possibility of future amendments. Critics argued it would help rural audiences while treasury officials called it a subsidy.
Prime Minister Churchill told British troops he hopes 1944 will bring the enemy to bay and England to glory. He praised the tenacity of Germany and noted the Fourth Queens Hussars, now a tank force, would revive cavalry traditions in the desert theater.

The police jury adopted the 1944 budget in a Wednesday session held to attend the funeral of Mrs. Lizzie Morris. It earmarks $50,000 in war bonds, $75,000 from the road maintenance fund, and $75,000 from the general fund, plus one additional mechanic at about $175 monthly to assist the prison carpenters.
