President elect John F Kennedy selected Rep Stewart Lee Udall of Arizona to be secretary of the Interior the third cabinet post named. Udall brings vigor imagined leadership to preserving and developing Americas natural resources.
The United States urged Soviet Ambassador Valerian Zorin to resign as U N Security Council president while Congo matters are debated. U S Ambassador James J. Wadsworth accused Zorin of prejudice and hindering the Congo mission, citing past Soviet actions including the Outer Mongolia and Mauritania votes.
Louisiana Attorney General Jack Gremillion urged the U S Supreme Court to halt all New Orleans integration proceedings before a three judge federal court until the state's appeal is decided. He argued interposition divests federal courts of jurisdiction and urged returning the four Negro girls to all Negro schools.
Republican officials filed an injunction in U S District Court to block Texas electors from voting for the Democratic ticket. Thirty minutes later they withdrew the suit unable to locate a Dallas federal court with a clear docket for a Monday hearing. Edwards AFB California AP Test pilot Scott Crossfield, after his final X15 flight, hopes to go into space aboard a rocket craft boosted by an Atlas missile. He envisions advanced X15 versions as space ferries between satellites and Earth or even orbit. His company North American Aviation backs the concept and Crossfield says he would want to fly such a project.
The memory of Pearl Harbor returned today as on every anniversary. In 1941 more than 2,400 died, including 1,102 in the Arizona. Other witnesses warned unemployment could rise to about 5.28 million next February if October's rate held at 6.4 percent. Actual October unemployment stood at 3.579 million. Paradiso described sluggish purchases for final use and shifting inventory patterns from accumulation to liquidation. Consumer demand showed strength but purchases waned in the third quarter. Housing construction continued down despite slightly better money markets, dampening housing activity prospects.
In Worcester Massachusetts a protected witness testifies as a mother recounts how her 20 year old daughter was repeatedly harmed during a night of terror. Ten men aged 17 to 29 face charges including rape robbery and kidnapping. Two defendants are Black. The girl was dragged from a parked car with her escort, robbed, and taken to another location where she faced further abuse.
Seattle AP report details three calls about youths riding bikes up a hill onto a restricted viaduct when a car driven by Edward C. Hawke 51 struck them. Vernon Childs Jr. 15 died on the tracks 40 feet below. sister Judy 14 and Dennis Springsteen 14 were injured. Hawke was arrested without charge.
