Curbs On Excess Profits Okayed
The House Commerce Committee voted restrictions on excess profits from the fuel shortage. An amendment by Rep. William B. Ross authorizes President Nixon to set prices on coal crude oil and petroleum products to deny windfall profits. The Cost of Living Commission also approved a two cent per gallon heating oil rise and a one cent gasoline cut, with expected January impact. Saudi Arabia signaled possible phased relaxations to the oil embargo if Israel withdraws and agrees to a timetable. Nixon advisers considered rationing gasoline as a policy option.
