A German submarine shelled an American vessel and sent it to the bottom without warning, prompting concerns over maritime safety and neutrality. The attack highlights escalating hostilities and potential repercussions for wartime conduct.
Members of the crew arriving in New York on the French liner Espance say the steamer John Lambert, listed as an American vessel, was shelled and sunk without warning by a German submarine on November 22 south of the Isle of Wight. The crew of sixteen escaped in boats, rowed to the French coast, and reported seeing the submarine sink another vessel and a bark. The Lambert was owned by the Great Lakes and S J Lawrence Transportation Co and built for Great Lakes shipment in 1902.
Mr. M. J. Duty, appointed custodian of the state house at Baton Rouge by Gov. Pleasant, will depart tonight and commence duties at once.

Commissioner RE Hunter charged Weil failed to attend duties and required extra assistants. the resolution ends Weil's term on December 6.
New Orleans, Dec. 6. Notices were served on department stores that under the 1916 child labor amendments there will be no 26 days of suspension for holiday shopping and stores must close at 6 o clock for girls under 18 and boys under 6. Women and children are limited to 10 hours a day or 60 hours a week. The law applies to all stores in the state under the state labor commissioner.
