The U S Department of Justice filed in Federal District Court in Madison Parish against registrar Katherine Ward as Judge Ben Dawkins Jr began a hearing this morning after a two day prior session on charges against Jackson Parish registrar Estelle Wilder. More than 35 witnesses were subpoenaed to testify, and Ward testified she now follows a new state registration law strictly while council members denied any involvement in 1956 voter purges. The government and Wilder and six Jackson Parish Citizens Council members face a 45 day window to file briefs. The six council members named were G W Acklin Lamis K Ross Joseph W Dark Harold C Haile Rufus G Pipes and A Salter.
Washington governors voiced limited opposition as the Pentagon unveiled a plan to reshape National Guard and Army Reserve forces. The proposal would abolish four Army Reserve and four National Guard divisions and transfer personnel into 11 new brigades and six high priority units, creating a strong first line in the reserves. Governor Rossellini urged wait‑and‑see after a Monday adjutants general meeting and before a conference committee review.
Two members of the Negro Muslim Church in New Orleans were ordered to appear in court to show why they should not produce Muslim records sought by the Louisiana legislative committee on un American activities. A Dec. 18 hearing was set. The committee, led by Jack N. Rogers, said the pair willfully failed to bring documents from the New Orleans Muslim chapter. The 1960 act empowers the panel to demand records. The group has been linked to separatist aims and recently clashed with Monroe police over access to its temple.
