A doorbell at George Spelvin's home leads to a heated encounter with a stranger selling social security insurance. Spelvin grills the huckster on assets, liabilities, reserves, and legality as the man touts that Uncle Sam is the reserve, and noncompliance could lead to prison.
A six member Chicago gang on their first raid south was arrested near Memphis at a roadhouse. Charged with a bold gambling house holdup near Byhalia Mississippi, they were seized by Tennessee highway patrolmen as their car neared the Colony Club shortly after midnight.

Six nations including the United States Britain France Ecuador Cuba and Norway filed a memorandum with UN Secretary General Trygve Lie urging immediate action to stop Communist China's intervention in Korea The steering committee will consider the matter after a 14 nation session today and a full assembly debate could follow if approved The memo notes Chinese Communist troops fight U N forces in Korea and recalls the Security Council veto on withdrawal proposals The push aims for an urgent assembly discussion and possible recommendations through a resolution similar to the vetoed draft from last week
Baton Rouge reports tighter collection of Louisiana two per cent sales tax will take effect January 1 as regulators close loopholes on sales under 25 cents. State Revenue Collector W A Cooper said the measure aims to curb underpayments without substantially boosting overall revenue.
Washington reports the house banking committee backed a 90 day extension of rent controls by 17 to 3 keeping the law through March 31 to give the 82nd congress time to decide after January. Senate debates a 60 day extension. Chairman Spence said the bill will go to rules for quick house action. Administration officials urged continued federal controls during mobilization.
Northeast Front Korea December five AP reports Frank Noel, veteran Pulitzer winning cameraman, was marched toward the north by Chinese captors. Two escaped Marine MPs confirmed Noel was not wounded and said prisoners were treated decently as Noel’s camera lens was recovered.
Chiang Kai-shek urged opposition to another Munich and pledged Nationalist China’s full backing to avert conflict. He warned war could break out if Munich repeats, and said he would send troops if needed. He tied UN action to U S responsibility and insisted Korea must not become another Czechoslovakia.
Severe cold and snow hit the eastern Midwest with floods threatening northern California. Temperatures plummeted to sub zero in Montana North Dakota and South Dakota while a new southward cold front reached Oklahoma Kansas and Iowa. Rivers receded slowly but hundreds remain displaced and thousands more at risk along the upper Ohio and flood plains.
Washington reports Gen Omar Bradley told senators withdrawals by UN troops could permit sea evacuation if Korea defense lines fail. Taft urged more information from Truman after talks with Attlee. Sen. Hoey echoed calls for withdrawal. Sen. Cain blasted limited disclosure and urged fuller use of all means against the enemy.

U S. casualties exceed other U N nations with about 31 784 total losses across the Army Navy and Air Force up to December 4 including 4 789 killed 21 900 wounded and 5 018 missing. About 100 000 Americans fought on land and 26 000 more in naval and air forces. Five other nations show roughly 17 900 in action with about 349 casualties.
United Nations forces may face total defeat in Korea prompting Dunkerque style withdrawal. Gen Omar Bradley reportedly told President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee that evacuation plans are ready if needed. They discussed building up heavy forces in Europe and returning UN troops to Korea if driven out, while avoiding a major war with China.
AP report describes Red Chinese army entering Pyongyang on a face-saving mission for Soviet-sponsored communism in the Orient. UN forces had driven back the Red Korean army from Pyongyang, with Chinese troops soon entering the city amid destruction and retreat of Allied forces toward Seoul. Reports from Seoul and frontline correspondents mix possible holds near Seoul with warnings of a wider Chinese push and a need for rescue support.
President Truman warned that Communist China has deliberately posed the world to the grave risk of general conflict. He urged unity of free nations to confront imperialism, while stressing continued U N collaboration for a peaceful world order and support for Korea amid Attlee talks.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation approved a 25 million loan to Kaiser-Frazer to sustain auto output and pivot toward defense. Kaiser plans a San Francisco Bay Area plant for military products and shipbuilding, with conditions to cap car prices, cut daily production to 600, and prioritize defense work.
Washington reports a blackout on draft induction and examination figures, with selective service saying data that could endanger national security must be cleared with national headquarters. The Defense Department denies ordering a blackout, while selective service notes a White House directive to forward any so called statistical data.
