Hearing Opens On Auto Repair Costs
Senate Antitrust subcommittee heard that auto repairs are a consumer jungle with dealers pressured by manufacturers to sell cars over service. Professor William N. Leonard warned Detroit earns mainly from car sales, not service, and urged stronger franchise protections, better dealer independence, and FTC probes into anti competitive parts distribution. Glenn F. Kriegel proposed licensed inspectors and mandatory annual checks at certified stations for all cars, including new vehicles before delivery.
