World chess checkers title match opens in West Palm Beach
In West Palm Beach the first world championship checkers match since 1900 begins between Asa A. Long of Toledo and Edwin F. Hunt of Tennessee. The 40 game contest runs with two daily sessions, a five minute move clock, and a five minute delay between moves under the supervision of 84 year old referee Joseph Brown. The opening days see a tight 2-2 split as spectators watch from the terrace above a hotel board.

Gloomy Gil Dobie Injured in Car Crash near Boston
Gilmour Dobie Boston college coach and Frank Murdock assistant were seriously injured when their car crashed into a bridge abutment.
