Goodfellows campaign kicks off with $9000 goal set
The 35th annual News-Star-World Goodfellows drive starts to raise $9000 for Christmas aid in the Monroe area. Jackie Neal leads the effort with Pete Dowd Bobby Barker and Donald Gill and local Jaycees donating time. Donations fund food clothing and possibly toys for children delivered on Christmas Eve.

Marine Sergeant Garry Wells and family of Monroe attended a graduation luncheon at Fort Belvoir Virginia where Wells, among 32 graduates, received a diploma from the 14 week Engineer NCO Course. The course teaches Corps of Engineers tactics for managerial or advisory duties. Harry Boyd Jr., 11, hunted with George Franklin's club in Morehouse Parish and bagged five deer including a six pointer.

Drawing In Draft Lottery Is Tonight

State License Plates Sales Begin Today in Louisiana
The 1970 71 Louisiana license plates went on sale at Department of Revenue offices across the state. In Monroe the office sits on the first floor of the State Office Building. Private car owners will need their pink registration slips, the owner’s vehicle identification card for new cars, and must sign the renewal forms. For the first time drivers must provide their license number and social security number on renewal apps unless the car is company registered. Vehicles for hire or state taxis and buses also go on sale today, with truck and trailer plates available in April 1970.

Rufus J. Goza, a retired Monroe Police Department member, died at 72 in Shreveport’s Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Funeral plans are with Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. A Yazoo City native, he served 25 years, was a World War I veteran, and a First Baptist Church member. He leaves his widow Irene, two sons, three daughters, two brothers, and 11 grandchildren.
