The Algerian government nationalizes the marketing subsidiaries of Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and Mobil Oil Co. of New York. The Official Journal reports a decree providing compensation to the firms.
Charles C. Calhoun 35 of 413 Arlington Pl West Monroe announces candidacy for a special election November 4 to fill the late Roland Nix on the West Monroe Board of Aldermen. Calhoun, longtime Ouachita Parish resident and sales manager, has led civic groups and church work, with two children and a wife teaching in Lenwis Elementary.
Los Angeles fire units fought a major brush blaze in Granada Hills for over five hours. Six houses were destroyed or damaged as 500 to 1,200 acres burned at peak, with 350 firefighters and 40 pieces of equipment. One firefighter was injured eye. Many residents evacuated belongings to cars amid foothill homes valued up to 70 thousand dollars.
River stage readings show Monroe at 15.9 feet with a rise of 0.1, Camden at 6.7 feet with no change. Flood presence listed for Monroe and Camden remains minimal with no stage decrease reported.
Twin Cities CHIT CHAT reports Mrs Maxine Milstead of Arkansas Road West Monroe recovers from major surgery at M D Anderson Hospital Houston. She will stay several weeks. Billy F. Wilhite, 31 of Monroe, announces candidacy for Ward 3 on the Ouachita Parish Police Jury subject to the November 4 Democratic primary. A lifelong Ward 3 resident and self employed insurance businessman, he pledges growth oriented, fair decisions and cooperation with jurors and officials. He is married with four children and serves on the Northeast Louisiana Association of Life Underwriters board.
Arlene, the season's first tropical storm, formed in the eastern Atlantic about 2,500 miles east of Miami. It had 60 mph winds and was forecast to strengthen to hurricane force by Thursday as it moved northwest at 17 mph. The center placed its position around 23.0°N, 42.5°W at 9 a.m. EST.
Senator Sam Ervin argued against Thurgood Marshall joining the Supreme Court, saying the court has overstepped constitutional bounds. Senator Philip Hart defended Marshall’s qualifications, noting committee support, while Stennis criticized Marshall’s revealed philosophy and urged opposition.
Communist forces entered Quang Ngai early today disrupting the presidential vote. They attacked the jail, military sites, a radio station, and an advisory compound as 29 incidents occurred across the 1st Corps area. The United Auto Workers union negotiators unanimously recommended rejecting the contract proposals from General Motors Ford and Chrysler as inadequate and inequitable.The union cited the offers as not meeting the pressing needs of workers and their families despite the automakers claiming the offers would bring the highest wage increases ever offered.
Overton Nevada police report the Bank of Las Vegas Overton branch manager Larry Staley 27 and two female tellers Vera Walkington 30 and Betty Heitmann 40 killed in a vault raid. Suspect Terry Lynn Conger 24 was arrested on murder and robbery charges after a nearby bait shop robbery prompted a police chase.
In Peking a few hundred demonstrators rough up British charge d affaires Donald Hopson outside his diplomat residence demanding an apology for clashes in London. China cancels exit visas for British diplomats and tightens travel, while London seeks talks to restore normal relations.
A National Bank of Commerce branch at 8200 block Hampson Street in New Orleans was robbed near noon by a man and a woman. The man, about 30, carried a revolver while the woman, in her early 20s, had a sawed off shotgun. they escaped with an undetermined amount of cash.
