Washington report says Congress pushes toward adjournment. Speaker Sam Rayburn aims for a House windup by early afternoon while the Senate may take longer though no major business is listed. The House clears a hurdle by approving 315 to 60 a bill to safeguard FBI file secrecy in criminal trials.
Omega Lancaster, 49, jailed as a suspect after his wife Ola Inez Lancaster, 46, died from a cerebral hemorrhage following a return from a picnic and a bar encounter. Witnesses say she was struck or pushed. no charges filed. Police noted drinking but not intoxication.
Federal judge in residence will decide whether Little Rock moves to desegregate next week amid conflicting orders from state and federal courts. At North Little Rock and Fort Smith two districts plan to integrate with students enrolling. Amis Guthridge hints possible litigation.
In Lombard Illinois a 14 year old boy with an urge to murder stabbed his girlfriend father Arthur Capitanelli 37 to death. He was found beneath Capitanelli’s body in a pool of blood with a three inch switchblade in hand and claimed he could not back out after being discovered.
The U.S. Weather Bureau predicts a cooler but unsettled Labor Day weekend in Louisiana with widely scattered afternoon thundershowers. Highs range from 92 to 96 degrees in Monroe and 85 to 90 in Bogalusa Baton Rouge Opelousas and New Iberia with nights around 71 to 76.
More than 150 Negro mothers with children marched peacefully to a white Melrose elementary school in Fisherville, Lake Charles, demanding exclusive Negro use. The protest stemmed from a parish plan to reassign Negro pupils to St John elementary ten miles away and included a boycott of bus transportation.
The Ouachita parish sheriff department continues an investigation into the wounding of Dallas, Texas man John E. Wrayford, 26, found near Moon Lake Dam north of Monroe with a single gunshot wound to the left chest. The pistol lay near his body and he was taken to St. Francis Hospital in satisfactory condition after earlier being listed as serious. Sheriff Bailey Grant notes a possible sex angle in the case.
The House passed and sent to President Eisenhower a 3.44 billion dollar foreign aid bill, well below the president’s request. The 194 to 122 vote split largely along party lines with 107 Democrats and 87 Republicans for the measure and 70 Democrats and 52 Republicans against. The Senate later approved the compromise 58 to 19.
Commander Raymond Cooper of Gray-McCorley Post 148 announces a Labor Day dance at the Plaza Club on the Vidalia Highway with proceeds to Cameron Relief Fund. Advance tickets are sold by post members and local businesses. admission is $1.50 per couple or $1.00 for stays. Betty Scott, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas H Scott, is named a Senior Sister at Stephens College for 1957 58 assisting new students with orientation and campus life.
