A safe stolen from Charles E. Bramble’s home was delivered unopened to Father Michael Holden of St. Gregory's rectory in San Antonio. The safe contained 1500 dollars in cash and 500 dollars in Mexican gold coins. Holden declined to reveal the donor, citing his vows.
The body of William Nance, 26, a tracker from Decherd Tennessee, was found in a lake near Winchester. Medical examiner Dr. W J Core said he was shot in the heart with a shotgun, between the shoulder blades with a .45 pistol, and in the stomach with a .32 or .38 caliber weapon, then weighed down with a rock tied by bailer wire.
The dispute centers on future policy for ex-Palestinians in Jordan with the UAR seeking to use Jordan as a bridge to Egypt and Syria. Nasser aims for an all Arab state including refugees while Hussein and Al Majali favor granting Jordanian citizenship to most Palestinian Arabs. In 1960 the state security council convicted 17 Jordanians including Mahmoud Roussan of plotting to overthrow the government, with sentences from five to fifteen years.
In Chicago on Lake Michigan the NAACP chapter led an integrated group of thirty Black and seven White participants to a South Side beach. The event sparked stone throwing and jeering by about fifty White bathers, injuring two Black participants while a White youth was arrested as police, double the usual force, escorted the group away after a protest against past incidents.
