The United States and India signed a 100000 agreement for a transfer of American agricultural and dairy products. India will receive 805000000 wheat cotton rice and dairy goods with shipping costs partly funded. The deal covers rupees 0.5 million and 240 pounds of cotton plus tobacco totals and dairy worth 3 million dollars.
Indictment handed down after two hours of testimony by Beatrice Weinberger mother of the month old child kidnapped from Westbury. LaMarca, 32, confessed and faces the death penalty on two charges kidnapping and murder. He may plead insanity, claiming unbalance from debt pressures. Continued on second page.
Officials predict about 19 000 students in Ouachita Parish schools with 12 000 in the parish system and 7 000 in Monroe city system. Openings set for next week with one grade per class and lunch price unchanged at 15 cents per meal.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon’s ailing father Frank Nixon, 77, is reported to be suffering a recurrence of an ulcer condition. Dr. T. N. Kraushaar said the office in Washington has been notified but Nixon has not been advised to return to his father’s bedside. His condition could improve or worsen. Frank Nixon was hospitalized earlier this year for hemorrhaging ulcers.
A political grouping led by CIO aligned leaders secured support for a split from the AFL. The maneuver united several former AFL locals and drew on backing from union figures to advance the strike for independence.
A 92 degree temperature reading at Selman Field at noon Wednesday followed a spell of cooler days. Cloudy skies were noted and thundershowers were forecast for the afternoon tonight and tomorrow with lows of 72 to 76 and highs of 87 to 92. The previous day max reached 87 and minimum 69.
The Progressive Men's club hosts about 500 members of the National Federation for Young Men's Clubs for a three day convention at the Alvis hotel starting Saturday. James Sparks will address a noon Sunday barbecue at the PMC grounds. The coronation ball Sunday night will crown Miss Sidney Tichell queen and Victor David Cascio king from Monroe with attendants and maids of honor from Alexandria and Shreveport.
The Pontchartrain Lake Causeway opens to traffic tomorrow as the world’s longest bridge. A ceremonial ribbon marks the event spanning Jefferson Parish near New Orleans to St. Tammany Parish near Mandeville. Construction began May 23 1955 and completed ahead of schedule after years of planning and early ferry use.
David Calhoun, 17, reports a fox that attacked his dog near his home two miles north of Calhoun was examined at the Ouachita parish health unit and found rabid. The fox bit the dog before being killed by Calhoun with a .22 rifle. Rabies outbreaks have been common in the area this year, with foxes plentiful in nearby woods.
In Mississippi, Representative Colmer appears set for a 13th term and Representative Williams for a fifth term based on incomplete returns from the Democratic primary. Colmer leads in the Sixth District with 28,089 votes to McClure’s 11,170, and Williams leads in the Fourth District with 7,758 to Halley’s 503 as results trickle in from multiple precincts.
