The German Reichstag accepted the Dawes reparation plan by a 314 to 127 vote to enact the railway bill implementing the London agreement. Nationalists opposed the Dawes banking bill, voting against it, though it passed 295 to 172.
On August 29 Chicago board of trade members will vote on creating a cotton futures market. If approved the market would operate under the cotton futures act with a federal examiner and a supervisory committee. Verbal contracts gain same enforceability as written. The move aims to boost Chicago’s grain and cotton trade and develop a broader market.
William T. Kennedy, disabled from World War I service, was named grand marshal for National Defense Day in New Orleans on September 12. He enlisted as a private, rose to sergeant, and now holds the rank of major on Governor Fuqua’s staff.
A severe hurricane with a hundred mile wind struck St Thomas and nearby Virgin Islands overnight, uprooting trees and wrecking houses and crops. No fatalities were reported though many poorer residents suffered damages.
New Wayburn, producer of the Siegfeld follies, told dancers at a national meeting that bobbed hair is out of fashion on stage. He said future musical comedies will not consider bobbed hair girls, favoring the Ann Pennington type for feature dressing.
Captain Thomas Burgess, who ferried the first Channel crossing, trains Miss Lillian Harrison of Argentina. Burgess predicts she will succeed in crossing the Channel in Paris after she began ten days ago but retired due to a leg injury. she plans to resume soon.
Lee Emmett Thomas, mayor of Shreveport and senatorial candidate, outlines his campaign platform at a city school auditorium rally. Senator Hood will chair. Thomas reports strong reception in Ouachita parish and New Orleans with active Thomas clubs and ward leadership backing his bid. He predicts a record majority in the state.
The body of W. D. Jones a 35 year old United States forest ranger in charge of the Tsppers District was found on Robert Weldons premises in Yell county according to forest supervisor C A Plymate. Authorities seek Weldon for questioning in connection with Jones death reported as stabbed or fatally shot.
Washington reports July imports at 276 818 940 down from 287 433 869 year earlier a decrease of 10 614 829. Exports for July valued at 276 739 329 versus 302 186 027 in July 1928 a drop of 25 446 698.
London dispatch reports a collision near La Hore in British India with sixty seven bodies found in wreckage and more than twenty others feared buried. Over fifty recoveries list serious injuries and forty nine as minor as officials tally the toll and debris sites.
Rex B. Magee, managing editor of the Jackson Daily News, was appointed state service commissioner and will also serve as state ad jutant of the American Legion. Governor Whitfield said the Legion endorsement required the appointment. Magee, a World War I veteran, has worked in Missouri Iowa Mississippi and Louisiana and recently returned to the Daily News as managing editor. He will replace Benton E. Jacobs Jr. who resigned.
The Prince of Wales arrived aboard the liner Beren Garia at Lower New York Harbor at 2 15 this afternoon. He planned to leave the vessel after medical inspection and proceed to Glencove Long Island aboard the yacht Black Watch for further events.

The United States government plans to renew efforts to return the Coltra barges and towboats to public service when federal court reconvenes. Goltra, a St. Louis iron manufacturer and former Democratic committeeman, holds the fleet under a 1919 contract. The boats, built for war use at over 3 million dollars, are idle at Rutger street wharf as litigation continues.

Chicago August 29 Judge J R Caverly began considering the sentence for Nathan Leopold Jr and Richard Leach after 32 days of testimony in Pubert Franks kidnapping slaying case The judge will issue a written opinion and arrange admission to the private sentencing session with guards and limited attendees to prevent demonstrations and avoid threats.
