Trades Day Established by Merchants

Merchants set the last Saturday of each month as Trades Day to boost commerce and attract customers. Local merchants agree the monthly event will feature markets, promotions, and special pricing to drive traffic and support small businesses.

About thirty leading Monroe retail merchants met at the Chamber of Commerce to organize monthly trades days aimed at drawing all Rich Monroe District residents to Monroe. The effort includes prizes for farm products and livestock, and aims to boost cooperation among merchants farmers and poultry raisers. A committee selected ten towns for advertising in ten papers, with credential rules for soliciting ads and donations.

Funds Are Available Line of Barges to Reach Southern Trade

Memphis August 29 The Alabama New Orleans Transportation Company plans a major barge network to sweep the South with shipments to seaside stores and iron ore. Three lines will run from Montgomery to New Orleans with a fleet of 15 barges expected in service by mid September. General Manager John J Bernard reports 400 workers are building and launching barges at rapid pace to expand from cotton lumber and coal to broad export trade.
