Washington Aug 28 Eight Louisianians and eight Mississippians appear in the defense department Korean war casualty list released today. The report lists killed in action wounded missing in action and those returned to military control with names and addresses of relatives.
The Senate moved to approve a 35.554 billion dollar annual funding measure to run the government this year, with prompt action expected. An emergency defense bill totaling 16.77 billion plus 14.68 billion in regular military funds would provide 5,333 new planes and related gear for the Korean War effort.
Eight of nine youths who escaped from the Louisiana Training Institute Sunday afternoon were caught Sunday night by Monroe and West Monroe police. West Monroe officers stopped a Trenton Appliance truck on Natchitoches street and, after questioning, learned the four youths had taken the vehicle with keys found in the glove compartment. They also admitted breaking into Bob Powell's Garage and taking $40 in cash and assorted items. Captured West Monroe youths were Reggie Caston 15 Robbie Mitchell 16 Harold Harris 16 Joe Swartz 15. J C Gresham said four escaped from the dairy and the remaining from the cottage.
Navy salvage experts from San Diego will decide if the sunken hospital ship Benevolence can be refloated or must be dynamited to clear San Francisco harbor. The vessel lies on its side in 75 feet of water two miles offshore after a fog collision with the freighter Mary Luckenbach, which left 18 dead and 13 missing.
President Truman signed a revised social security bill adding about 10 million to old age pension rolls and funding, with payroll taxes rising from 2.5 billion to about 7.8 billion by 1970. The measure narrows federal limits on unemployment insurance fund cuts and expands coverage starting January 1, while October will bring larger checks for current beneficiaries. A Gulf storm near Pensacola intensified to hurricane force, with 75 to 85 mph winds and storm warnings affecting Florida to Louisiana coasts.
Washington Aug 28 The army took over the rail system by order of President Truman to avert a nationwide strike. The walkout threatened by Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the order of railway conductors was called off within a half hour of seizure. Major railroad presidents were placed in charge of operations with army officers supervising. The dispute centered on pay with demands for a 40 hour week and wage boosts for yard workers.
Louisiana department of highways announced bids on 1.5 million dollars of road work across nine parishes with listed projects and apparent low bidders. Bidders include W H Patterson Co Baton Rouge. H L Allen Sons Elton. Texas Bitulithic Co New Orleans. Forcum James Co Baton Rouge. Leftwich Co Inc New Orleans. T L James Co Ruston. and others for asphalting widening surfacing and graveling jobs in Ascension Beauregard Bossier Morehouse Ouachita St John the Baptist St Mary West Carroll Winn parishes.
Detroit August 28 Packard boosts wages nine cents an hour ending the 13 day strike by its 8000 workers under a five year contract with the United Automobile Workers the new pay mirrors General Motors terms includes four cent annual rise and five cent cost of living increase plus pensions of 100 to 125 dollars monthly and expanded benefits.
Washington reports President Truman cracked down on General Douglas MacArthur after he proposed a Formosa statement seen as foreign policy overreach. Truman directed withdrawal of the remark and released a letter to UN ambassador Warren Austin restating U S Formosan policy to avoid misunderstandings. The dispute widens rifts between military and diplomatic officials.

U S Senator Maybank and House conferees eyed a wage price rationing compromise amid anti inflation talks.
The 4 B 29s conducted a strike at Songjin in north Korea delivering 300 tons of bombs. Allied planes supported ground troops as navy carrier aircraft attacked vessels off Korea s east coast. Air force and allied units conducted numerous sorties by mid afternoon.
Baton Rouge reports July business activity in Louisiana rose 20.4 percent year over year per LSU Commerce Research Department. All eight indices advanced led by retail department store sales up 35.1 percent and construction contracts gaining 91.4 percent.
