London Aug 28 Twenty persons died when a large air transport crashed into a house near the Trans Atlantic military air base at Prestwick Scotland. Seven crew members 14 passengers and five occupants of the house perished. American soldiers civil defense workers searched through the night for additional victims. Two nearby houses were damaged and a fourth lost its roof. The plane was inbound from an Atlantic crossing.
Four tiny boys weighing about three pounds each were born to Mrs Charlee E Lee at Hall County Memorial Hospital Gainesville. The mother and father, Army private Charlee Lee and Camp Blanding stationed, express joy as doctors call the four identical infants healthy with good chance of survival.
Allied offensives in southern France reported heavy German losses with more than half of deployed troops believed killed wounded or captured. American forces reached the Rhone valley near Montelimar cutting off retreat of the German 11th Armored Division while Butlers task force and Maquis harass remnants attempting to withdraw toward Valence.
Cpl Richard George Deibler of the medical detachment at Selman Field was struck by a reportedly speeding car on DeSiard road while seeking a ride to the airport. He died at Selman Field Hospital early Sunday. Efforts to locate the driver continued. Deibler’s body was sent to Duluth Minnesota for burial.

London and southern England faced a noon attack by robot bombs ending a 30 hour lull. The brief bombardment followed a longer 72 hour pause with renewed optimism as shelters emptied at night. The Daily Mail reported Russians claimed a test site in Poland related to super V-2 rockets.

Johnny Hoffmann a 32 year old German prisoner of war escaped from Camp Stark on August 16. He thumbed a ride along Route 117 near Lisbon and was picked up by Police Chief Harry T Andross who recognized him and drove him to the Lisbon jail. Army officials and FBI agents then returned him to the camp.
Louis B. Mayer, 59, head of MGM production, was riding at his Hemet California area farm when his horse shied and threw him. He was taken to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital where Dr. Donald W. Blanche said the injury is serious but not life threatening and may keep him bedridden for some time.
