Westbrook Pegler notes Ernest Bevin's warning against substituting one totalitarian system for another. He cites Britain’s wartime alliances and recent movements in Romania Hungary and Russia, arguing Americans should resist any shift toward communism under the guise of political necessity.
Admiral Halsey leads the Third Fleet as the battleship Missouri and British Duke of York reach Sagami Bay. Over 1 200 carrier planes fly as minesweepers begin clearing a path to Yokosuka. Yokosuka will be taken by 10 000 marines and naval personnel with Nagate crippled earlier.
General MacArthur designates Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger to lead occupation of the Tokyo area with later landings at Yokohama and Tateyama. The timetable cites August 30 arrival, September 2 surrender ceremonies aboard the Missouri, and early September landings around Tokyo and Yokohama.
Soviet airborne and naval forces under General Maxim Purkaev seized Omekotan Shashiotam and Matsuwa in the Kuriles west of the Aleutians. About 15,000 Japanese troops were killed or captured as the Red Army expanded its advance in Sakhalin’s southern region and pushed toward Japan.

A separate opinion says road districts may be consolidated into one district, not covering all parish territory.
Washington dispatch reports the Truman administration plans to repurpose enemy science and patents for American industry under Reconversion Director John W. Snyder. Congress and business groups debate funding for jobless workers and draft policy as wartime controls ease and consumer goods expansion looms.

The News-Star World corrects an error reporting W. H. Dennis arrested for disturbing the peace. The arrest involved D. F. Dennis, Calhoun coach, not the city employee W. H. Dennis. Sheriff Milton Coverdale announced the correction on Monday.
Russia and China formalize a nine year pact to deter Japan in Asia and resolve Chung king Chinese Communist differences. Moscow pledges military aid to Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists, exclude the northern Communist regime, and mutual aid against attack. Manchuria to be returned with a three month Russian withdrawal. Signed August 1 after talks led by Sun Fo and V. M. Melotov.
Chinese officials announced Nanking and Canton were in Chinese hands as surrender talks progressed. Correspondents reported entry into Nanking, occupation troops restoring order, puppet organs dissolved, and two pro Nationalist papers resuming. Formal surrender set for Sept. 3 in prewar capital.
General Yamashita of the Philippines accepts surrender negotiations with the U S Army from his Luzon mountain stronghold. In a letter to Maj Gen W H Gill of the 82nd Division he says Tokyo orders surrender and troops should stop fighting. Plane reconnaissance confirmed the location for surrender.
President Truman urged Congress to extend selective service and war emergency, proposing a two year induction for 18 to 25 year olds. He warned against ending the draft prematurely and favored boosting volunteer enlistments to reduce forced inductions, with estimates of enrollment and troop levels through next July.
Washington August 27 The House rules committee may learn today the results of a treasury investigation into loans obtained by Brig Gen Elliott Roosevelt. The inquiry follows columnist Westbrook Pegler's claim that $200000 was borrowed in 1939 to fund a Texas radio venture with further scrutiny of related debt deductions.
Corpus Christi reports 100 to 135 mph winds pounding San Antonio bay towns as a gulf hurricane neared Port O’Connor. Sea Drift and Austwell suffered heavy damage as the storm moved up the Texas coast from Corpus Christi, with the New Orleans weather bureau advising at 9 a.m. that winds remained strong and the coast remained under threat.
Frisco was jolted by a sharp earthquake at about 2 13 a m with objects shaken from shelves. University of California seismologist Dr Perry Byerly said it rated 4 on the Rossi Forel scale, an average San Francisco bay area quake with little chance of damage. He expected seismograph readings by 9 a m.
