In Alexandria Louisiana on August 26 Mrs. Foreman of Lake Charles chased Miss Mildred Lee and Miss Lula Benefield, staging a fight that led to Foreman being stabbed three times by Miss Lee with a dirk. Foreman survived and was treated at a local hospital.
Thirty people were injured, three seriously, when five cars of the St. Louis San Francisco No 806 derailed at Menfro Missouri. Officials cited a defective rail as the cause. Three sleepers a smoker and chair car left the track and two coaches rolled over. The Memphis to St Louis regular train was diverted to pick up the injured and return to St Louis.
Ed Carter, 64, accused of killing Paul Johnson a Selma planter, surrendered after a multi county manhunt. Arrested on a Gum Ridge farm in Jefferson County following negotiations aided by two intermediaries. Carter said he would surrender if protected and was taken to Adams County jail by Sheriff Reed.
In Chicago on August 26 the Peake school of dancing leader W C Peake urged the American Society of the Teachers Dancing to help reform after high school dances on the North Shore were labeled wild. He said hip flasks are common in 15 year old boys pockets and fights and petting parties frequent.
On the North Atlantic near Cape Farewell the missing Italian seaplane piloted by Lt Locatelli was found aboard the USS Richmond after an all-night search. Four men were rescued, two engineers endured seasickness, and the plane was destroyed as the crew slept aboard.
Edgar A. Bancroft a prominent Chicago lawyer is likely to be named American ambassador to Japan. A formal inquiry has been sent to Tokyo by the State Department and Japanese officials are expected to respond favorably. He would succeed Cyrus E. Woods who recently resigned. Formal notification to Washington is anticipated soon.
In Meridian Mississippi on August 26 the jury found Ben Pickett guilty of murdering Federal Prohibition Agent D. B. Cleveland near Zero eight miles from Meridian during a moonshine raid on July 10. The jurors could not agree on punishment and Judge C. Miller sentenced Pickett to life imprisonment.
At Camp Custer near Battle Creek Michigan a klan gathering was dispersed by a guard detachment led by General George Moseley. Thirty five people were placed in the guard house with many spectators claimed, and a general order warning against future unlicensed meetings was expected to be issued.
New Orleans police, sweeping bootleggers, race handbook operators, lottery vendors, gamblers, and others opposed to law observance, arrested several wagon loads of women with no visible means of support. The campaign, begun over three weeks ago near Canal Street, will continue with vigor.
Governor Fuqua and highway commission chairman W T Perte man are due in Lake Charles to attend the Lone Star Route Highway Association convention in Jot es. Delegates from points between Chicago and Lake Charles are expected. The program includes business on day one and a Gulf of Mexico boat ride on day two.
Stagnation in the cattle market on the livestock stock exchange followed Wilson and Company withdrawal from buying. Other large packers paused as well, but officials said the lull would be temporary and that Wilson and Company would return to the market.
London August 26 Great Britain's coast line will soon be patrolled by seaplanes under construction for the navy. Each craft will carry a pilot navigator two machine gunners and a torpedo. More powerful planes are being built for longer sea ward flights carrying five men.
A heavy Atlantic gale rages from New Jersey to Maine with two storm centers off the coast. One person is killed and 23 injured in accidents linked to the storm as heavy rain falls from Savannah to Maine. The Solazar dredge is in danger off Atlantic City with 80 men aboard the listing vessel. The Creole liner, en route to New Orleans, carries 35 New Orleanians and notable passengers amid the storm.
Norfolk, Virginia, August 26. The storm that drenched towns and drove ships to shelter continued its north-northeast path early today with little known damage. Hurricane warnings from Beaufort to Cape Henry kept many vessels in harbor and others recalled or redirected as winds intensified.
In Pimlico Sound off Virginia and North Carolina coasts, the tug Mildred McNally from Philadelphia sank during the hurricane. The crew escaped by launching their own boats.
Federal officers report counterfeit currency in denominations of 5 10 20 and 50 dollars passed at Hawthorne race track in Chicago. More than 100000 dollars circulated, mainly in betting, as investigators seek the origin of the bills.
Constance Vicars Elaine Lamache both age three and daughters of Mr and Mrs C C Landrache of St Gabriel Louisiana perished in a late night blaze that destroyed their home. The parents were injured severely and the fire left the parents unable to rescue the children. The roof collapsed soon after discovery and neighbors could not reach the flames.
Houston August 26 The Texas Republican state executive committee meets to select a governor candidate to replace T P Lee who resigned after congratulating Democrat Miriam Ferguson on July primary runoff. Six candidates remain with a seventh described as a dark horse ready to draw Democrat opposition support.
Bodies of three soldiers from Company L 151st Infantry Indiana National Guard killed when an army motor truck overturned near Camp Henry Knox will be sent home with military escort and buried with honors. Nineteen other guardsmen were injured, not seriously.
In Butte Mont Rev Z C O Farrell of the First Baptist Church announced he will place a human skull in the pulpit for next Sunday's sermon The Downfall of an American Idol The skull will have candlelit eye sockets while he discusses Kid McCoy the former boxer on trial for murder in Los Angeles The church will be darkened during the service.
Chicago August 26 The State's Attorney Robt E Crowe urged the death penalty for Nathan Leopold Jr and Richard Loeb in final argument, attacking the defense mercy plea. He claimed the law requires death in cases of extreme violence and said judges and prosecutors have no right to forgive injuries to the law.
The army world fliers announced from the cruiser Milwaukee that they expect to fly from Ivigtut Greenland to the Labrador coast on Thursday with Lt. Smith reporting the mission is progressing well and will continue on the 28th to Major General Patrick chief of the air service.
The Ohio Democratic Party at its state convention in Columbus adopts a formal anti Klan plank aligned with John W. Davis as expressed in his Seagirt New Jersey speech. The resolutions committee approved the measure by 11 to 7 amid cheers when read.
Genevieve Skardon nine year old daughter of Rev A W Skardon pastor of the Episcopal church in Bastrop was seriously injured when a car wheel passed over her body. The incident occurred about six last night in front of Snyder's store Bastrop. The driver was a woman friend of the family and her name was omitted at Rev Skardons request. The minister said Genevieve stepped into the street not seeing the third car after two passed. The accident scene was several blocks from the rectory.
Mrs Miriam Ferguson led Felix Robertson for the Democratic nomination with a 91 000 vote margin as Texas returns from 239 of 252 counties showed Ferguson at 430 711 to Robertson 39 448. More results were awaited.
Willie Washington, part of the trio linked to Sheriff Rentz’s slaying in Jackson parish, was moved to Shreveport for safekeeping while Freeman Coleman and Booker Boone were the remaining suspects. Bloodhounds traced Coleman toward Claiborne parish as 800 to 1000 posse members searched two miles north of Athens. Former detective E J Erwin joined the chase and Coleman remained armed with Rentz's pistol as the pursuit continued.
La. Oakdale August 26. A fire destroyed the Forest Lumber Co planing mill kiln and yards at Oakdale but the main mill was saved after dynamite cleared a path. Estimated loss is $300 000 with plans for continuing operations as a two year timber cut remains.
Prime Minister MacDonald told the League of Nations in Geneva that Britain seeks lower armament costs but cannot promise that future governments will not exceed current outlays. He blamed a costly arms race among nations and urged mutual agreements to end it.
