Twin Cities item notes Marine Cpl Terry G Hattaway son of Mr and Mrs Arlan R Hattaway of Wallace Road West Monroe has reported for duty at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point NC A 1974 West Monroe High School graduate he joined the Marines in August 1974 plus a brief mention of Ouachita Parish school openings and motorist advisories from the Chit Chat page.
At Panmunjom the United States urged North Korea to punish those responsible for the murder of two UNC officers during a dispute over pruning a tree. North Korea proposed separating guards north and south of the line and Kim Il Sung expressed regret privately. the U N C called the proposal a potentially positive step but demanded concrete action and assurances of guard safety.
President Ford privately concedes the Deep South and New York to Jimmy Carter, sighting solid Carter strength in the South and Texas while Florida may be vulnerable. Ford focuses on the Midwest next, eyeing debates as a campaign hinge with four 90 minute debates proposed.
President Ford faces a backlog of 19 nominations awaiting Senate confirmation mainly to federal judgeships and regulatory posts. The Senate Public Works Committee rejected Longshore for a TVA seat 8 to 6, with Democrats split and some opposing scheduling until after the election.
The body of 14 year old George William Billy Anderson was recovered from the Tensas River 13 miles west of Waterproof. He disappeared Tuesday after leaving home to run a trot line and was found after family members reported his boat nearby. He was not wearing a life jacket. Investigating agencies included Louisiana State Police and multiple parish sheriffs and local police. He was to begin attending Waterproof High School.
United Press International notes Cuzco in Peru, capital of the ancient Inca Empire dating from the 11th century, as the Western Hemisphere's oldest city.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz dedicates a new Tuxtla Gutierrez factory to produce sterile male screwworm flies for release along a 125 mile isthmus. President Luis Echeverria to attend. aim is to expand a biological barrier to curb the pest in Mexico and the U S Southwest.
Construction on a new median barrier at the Texas Street interchange marks progress in a federal urban safety program for I-20. The concrete barrier stands two feet eight inches high with a 36 inch wire mesh cap, part of a 3.345 mile project due to finish by summer 1977 with Dolphin Construction Co. as contractor per the Louisiana Department of Highways.
FBI Uniform Crime Reports show the 1975 national level of serious crimes near 11.3 million with only one in five arrests. Suburban areas rose 10 percent and rural regions 8 percent, while cities over 250 000 posted 7 percent. Overall rates imply a violent crime every 31 seconds and a murder roughly every 26 minutes.
