In Helens Oregon a football stuck in a tree led to the death of 13 year old Keith Karjala after touching a live power line. His cousin Larry Tolleshaug 13 and neighbors Sidney Weybright 30 and Robert Tabor 40 climbed the tree to help and were killed attempting a rescue. Power company crew recovered the bodies. Larry survived with bruises and was kept for observation.
In Hilo Hawaii an spectacular eruption of Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano, lasted 38 hours and ended Friday with steam. The crater activity tapered off into smoking cracks and scientists warned of possible further outbreaks along the crater chain on the island’s southern flank 200 miles southeast of Honolulu.
