Paris dispatch says forces 25 miles west of Marseille reach the Rhone corridor as French units captured key positions and advance toward Grenoble and the lower Rhone valley. American troops reach near Swiss frontier with operations continuing from Marseille toward Arles.
Allied reports say British troops push along the Seine pocket as German forces retreat toward the river’s high ground. Intelligence notes a German bridgehead opposite the Allied lines and preparations to protect crossings at Le Havre and the river’s mouth.
British and American troops of the Eighth Army push near the Arno River in Italy with reduced enemy resistance. They capture Mt. Forno and other key points and report gains in the Lunatic sector as Italian forces secure Metauro banks inland. He argued war production needs within limits and warned against a blanket purge of workers, noting estimated year end manpower declines.

Romanian troops march into Transylvania as Bucharest shifts sides and declares co belligerency with the Allies while German and Hungarian forces face renewed clashes. Russian advances toward Romania loom as Berlin reports a Communist regime in Bucharest and warns of panic amid the rapid capitulation.
Washington Aug. 24 Leaders of the House post-war military policy committee debated timing for compulsory peace-time training. A poll showed fear of pacifist backlash if delayed, and risk of political football if moved now. Indications favored action after November elections to enact before the new Congress. Chairman Woodrum and Chairman May voiced belief the legislation could be expedited through their panels.
The U S Fifteenth Air Force raided central Europe with about 300 aircraft, destroying 45 Luftwaffe planes over the Vienna area. The raid followed heavy losses for Allies including 29 planes in a prior day and three the night before. Attacks targeted Merkersdorf airfield, Vienna industrial district, and Fanto Wosendorf refinery.
Stockholm August 24 Finnish minister to Sweden G A Gripenberg flew to Helsinki in a bid to move Finland from the war. Observers noted no direct contact with Moscow and suggested Romania’s exit might quicken Finland’s peace moves led by Baron Mannerheim. Foreign office cautioned such reports could affect Finland’s stance.
