In Varto Turkey the earthquake wrecked the town in seconds killing thousands in four province disaster. Officials report 2000 to 3000 dead with 9100 in Varto district while 58000 families require resettlement as the army ferries bread and aid to survivors.
Two German youths who had been stranded a week on an icy ledge in the French Alps were rescued and brought to Chamonix. Gary Hemming of Pasadena led a seven man operation and described the ascent and descent as a demanding effort. The pair began the climb on August 14 toward Drao 11,000 feet before rain and snow forced a halt on a shelf. Surit o and the others faced a grueling rescue and the boys survived the ordeal.
A gas leak caused a devastating explosion at the Church of God in Christ in Plainview Texas. A woman died and 53 were injured as debris collapsed the roof trapping workers and choir members. Rescuers searched amid mud and rain while ambulances ferried victims to area hospitals.
The 1966 fiscal year shows workers in the Shreveport area were paid 757770 dollars less than FLSA wages. WHPC supervisor Kenneth Swartz announced back wages due in 488 establishments across 29 northern parishes for June 1965 to June 1966. Shreveport. New York based Friends sent token parcels of medical supplies to Canada for North Viet Nam and Viet Cong Red Cross, and to South Viet Nam Red Cross. Checks of 160 dollars each were sent to Canadian Friends Service Committee. Justice Department would comment after Post Office report.

HURON Ohio Police Chief Louis Vargo signed an affidavit charging his father Louis P Vargo 59 with involuntary traffic manslaughter in the death of Ethel Karchin 76 Vermilion who died of injuries from a crash on August 8 Vargo was charged Monday after the elder Vargo allegedly turned in front of a car driven by the victim's son He was released on a 1000 bond pending arraignment Friday.
