Nine Killed as Bomb-Laden Plane Crashes East of Denver

An army B-18 bomber from Lowry Field crashes 43 miles east of Denver during a bombing exercise. Two officers and seven enlisted men die. the wreckage is found after a night storm. Victims include pilot Second Lieutenant Wilbur A. Champagne and co-pilot Second Lieutenant Robert P. Schmidtchen, among others.

Advises Against Further Bonds For Louisiana Roads

The Public Roads Administration urged the Louisiana Highway Commission to avoid issuing more bonds secured by the seven cent gasoline tax. A survey for Governor Sam Jones cited high maintenance costs on minor roads and recommended reducing road mileage and transferring gasoline tax proceeds to the highway commission. No action yet from the commission, but reorganization plans progress amid criticism of road maintenance costs rising from 238 to 439 per mile.

Welfare chief appeals doctors to curb ineligible hospital care

Baton Rouge August 3 welfare commissioner C Ellis Heni called on physicians statewide to cooperate in preventing ineligible patients from receiving treatment at state owned hospitals.
