Insurgent Generalissimo Franco rejected two key points of a plan to withdraw foreign fighters from Spain, delaying the British Italian friendship treaty. The move risks new delays and questions about the fate of foreign troops as Chamberlain and Halifax confer.
Harry Hopkins denounces reports that the Workers alliance seeks to raise 50 000 from New York relief workers to aid rival candidate John J. O Connor. He notes the legal right but calls the idea bad and says WPA workers may vote as they wish.
Washington reports social security board records show Louisiana women hold nearly one third of jobs in the state. May applications totaled about 19,008, with 2,037 white women and 876 African American women among applicants, many in their twenties.
New Orleans reports H. T. Dick Merrill plans a 12 hour ocean flight in a single engine open cockpit plane for a demonstration to the French government. He will carry just enough gasoline and hopes to beat existing records en route to France next month.
Paris August 22 two Daladier cabinet ministers Ludovic Frossard and Paul Ramadier resigned amid a crisis over the plan to abolish the 40 hour week in French industry. Ramadier blamed the premier for not informing him about the speech announcing the plan.
Floyd Hamilton and Ted Walters, both formerly jailed in Montague County, were arrested in Dallas after four months of robberies and hijackings across the Southwest. Walters claimed many crimes were committed by others. Hamilton denied a specific bank robbery but admitted owning a gun. Hamilton carried little money and few shells.
Idaho senator James P. Pope discussed a possible independent bid for re election with President Franklin D. Roosevelt after losing renomination in the Democratic primary. Pope said he has not decided yet and would likely choose before returning to Idaho in the coming week.
Two men died and between 30 and 50 were injured when two southbound Lexington Avenue subway locals collided. Fire and darkness sparked panic as rescuers freed Salvatore Cota who later died, and Emanuel Auerbach was killed instantly. Police feared another body remained in wreckage.
Ralph S. Messick 33, married father of two, employed by DeSoto Wholesale Grocery, shot himself with a Winchester early today in Logansport La. He had attended a rodeo in Shreveport Sunday and returned about midnight. Coroner’s inquest ruled death by self-inflicted action. no note found. Survived by widow Alva Clark and two daughters Margaret 7 and an infant six weeks old.
Secretary of State Edward Clark overruled a petition from Maury Maverick supporters in San Antonio to place his name on the November ballot as an independent candidate for Congress. The decision keeps Maverick off the Austin ballot.
City of Monroe switches from old Lee avenue trolleys to five new Reo buses. The south side public welcomes faster service with two routes: Jackson to Lee and South Grand lines, loading near Liggett's Drug Store.
Douglas G. Corrigan the famed wrong way ocean flier was invited by Acting Mayor Fred A. Earhart to visit New Orleans. He was en route from Milwaukee to St Louis and was invited to visit Shreveport on Wednesday.

Ouachita parish health unit issued a report on milk gradings for Monroe and West Monroe dairies under a strict ordinance. Grade A pasteurized and Grade A raw milk plants are listed, with Grade B raw milk and several applicants for regrading awaiting notification by the health department.
Dr James W Miles a New Orleans dentist and Downsvile, Louisiana native who practiced dentistry for many years died today. He is survived by his widow Emily Vallon Jimeca.
William M. Hunt of 214 South Riverfront West Monroe died Sunday noon after weeks of illness from a heart attack. Funeral held Monday at 3:40 p.m. Rev C K Smith officiating. Interment in a local cemetery. He was longtime Palace department store employee on the third floor and active in the Methodist church. Survived by his wife and seven children.
Captain Thomas Kendrick Brittan passport officer in Vienna was arrested and expelled from Germany on espionage charges. He left for London with his wife by airplane, arriving here Saturday after alighting.
Maryland Democratic senatorial race features Senator Millard E. Tydings and Representative David J. Loewe arguing that President Roosevelt has no right to interfere. They claim the voters must decide Maryland's senate representation without presidential meddling in the September 12 primary against Arthur Hungerford.
Tokyo reports Japan lodged a strong protest with the Soviet Union over alleged air reconnaissance and violations of a truce on the Manchoukuo frontier. Mamoru Shigemiten protested to Max Litvinov about flights and Soviet pressure on Japanese consulates.
Fighting near Shanghai intensifies as 1,900 Japanese troops clash with Chinese guerrillas on the Hungiao western edge near the city. The dawn battle endangers foreign residents while guerrillas use rifles and machine guns in the flare up, the largest in the region since last November.
