Grand jurors indict SS and multiple associates on charges related to fraud and conspiracy. Several co-defendants receive sentences including prison terms and fines as prosecutors outline the case's scope and implications.
President Roosevelt sent invitations to Governor Landon of Kansas and the governors of Iowa Nebraska Missouri and Oklahoma to attend drought conferences starting August 27 in Bismarck North Dakota and August 29 in Pierre South Dakota with eleven other governors also invited. Senators were asked to attend as well.
Virgil F Effinger of Lima Ohio named national head of the Black Legion is indicted with 21 others on charges of criminal syndicalism for advocating violence and terrorism to reform industry or politics. The group faces maximum penalties of 10 years and fines. additional conspiracy counts carry further terms.
In Mexico City Aug 21 1936 officials warned a new crisis may unfold as Emilio Portes Gil resigns as president of the national revolutionary government party. Cabinet figures Saturnino Cedillo and C Eduardo Suarez were viewed as most likely to follow suit, with others possibly exiting the cabinet.
Dick Merrill and Marty Richman prepare a round trip NY to London in an 895000 dollar monoplane at Floyd Bennett Field. They claim the journey there and back can be completed in under 48 hours amid flying fans inspecting the aircraft.
Moscow court heard how a copy of the Arabian Nights was used as a secret code among anti Stalin conspirators. Edward Holzmann testified he linked T Smirnoff, Moscow Trotzkyites head, with Sydedofe in Berlin via the book to pass reports on the USSR. Leon Trotzky was named as the mastermind of the alleged plot.
Rush P. Strong longtime manager of the Louisiana rating and fire prevention bureau resigns after 31 years with the bureau. Edward J. Sullivan says the resignation is accepted and will take effect once a suitable successor is found.
Hopewell New Jersey reports Charles Ward Hall age 59 of Morrisville Pennsylvania owner of All-Aluminum Air craft Inc Bristol Pennsylvania died in a crash in a Mt Rose woodland five miles from Hopewell. The accident occurred in dense fog today.
Washington Aug 21 The new federal excise taxes on imported fats oils and oil bearing seeds began today These duties range from two to four and a half cents a pound and apply to tallow inedible fats greases and several vegetable oils used in soap paint and lard substitutes Goods arrive from Manchuria Argentina Europe and the Dutch East Indies These levies add to those approved in 1934 despite Roosevelt opposition and especially affect coconut oil from the Philippines
Sheriff says Dorsey Guillory confessed to killing Lucien Ledoux near Eunice after a dispute over money. Ledoux was shot in the back while riding in a farm wagon and robbed of 72 dollars plus cotton sale receipts. Guillory held in Crowley jail as locals react to the case. Evan Sonnier, 29, a friend of Ledoux, released from custody after questioning.
Rufus W. Fontenot, acting collector for the New Orleans district, reported federal tax collections for the first month of the new fiscal year up 60 percent from the same period last year. He added Louisiana’s rise was about twice the national rate.

Rome August 21 King Victor Emmanuel conferred on Prof. Aldo Castellani of Louisiana State University and surgeon general of the Italian forces in East Africa the hereditary title of count of his music. He praised Castellani for keeping troops healthy during the Ethiopian campaign, aiding Italian victory.
Washington August 21 A special senate committee began an investigation into alleged civil liberties violations in labor disputes. Subpoenas were issued to Railway Audit and Inspection, Pinkerton, and Burns agencies with records to be reviewed. Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin chairs the panel.
Three navy destroyers searched 562 miles west of Guadalupe Island after reports that the San Joaquin had sunk. The destroyers, with searchlights blazing, found no trace of the vessel or its crew who had sent SOS messages on Wednesday and yesterday. Commander Edward C. Raguet reported no contact was made.
Mayo Clinic relief bulletin reports Governor Floyd B Olsen weaker with abdominal ailment pain and feeding difficulty. Temperature rose by one degree, noted as serious problems despite a fairly comfortable night. he was flown by charter from Gull Lake summer home to Rochester for care.
Henry Brewer 2 of Tullos was killed on the Winnfield Tullos highway when struck and dragged 40 feet by a car driven by Jack Jarvis of Trout. A coroner's jury found involuntary homicide and Jarvis likely to be arrested. Funeral at Tullos Methodist church with burial in Washington Arkansas. Survived by parents, four siblings.
Aaron Noftal, 52, was booked on a charge of defrauding loan agencies by pawning painted diamonds. He allegedly sought 826.25 from Canal Loan Co by a confidence scheme. Detectives investigated after a pawned stone revealed as painted and inferior.
