Carlson states that Royal Flying Doctor Service personnel are among workers involved in the rail strike. He notes readiness to take over transportation tasks in the Far West when required.
Chicago August 21 The statement from Martin Carlson general secretary of the railroad workers industrial union part of the I W W says many I W W members are among the railroad strikers and some have quit to protest military despotism He asserts I W W members would take over railroad transportation and other industries but denies seeking control of the government He emphasizes workers and industries as the nation’s lifeblood and argues for solid unity of productive workers.
An American rain maker arrived in Naples invited by the Italian government to induce rain across drought struck districts in southern Italy. If successful, the process may be used elsewhere and explained to Pope Pius with a plan to revive the Vatican gardens without rain.
Washington reports to Cuba seeking steps to curb smuggling of aliens into the United States. Secretary of Labor Davis cites 30,000 Chinese and 40,000 Europeans in Cuba awaiting entry, urges a compulsory registration law if voluntary measures fail, and notes thousands of aliens in the US with no right to be here.

Rockford Illinois August 21 The Illinois Chamber of Commerce designates this week as Herrin week to raise funds for Attorney General Edward J Brundage. The effort supports detection and prosecution of those responsible for the Herrin massacre of non union miners in June.
The Willington house of representatives yesterday ratified the Washington treaties. The decision came on Aug. 2 and marks a formal approval by the town's legislative body.

Johnstown Pennsylvania August 21 Mayor Joseph Cauffiel urged saloonkeepers and brewers to sell real beer and ale but federal prohibition agents reported seven men on duty with no arrests. Agents expect continued inquiry though many establishments saw high patronage and saloon owners appeared cautious. Mayor said bootleggers poison the water and hours of edict left brewers wary of federal law.

He stresses cooperation and reparations but rejects punitive aims. In Chicago, 4,650 Klansmen initiated beneath a 20 foot cross in a field near the city as 25,000 bystanders watch the ceremony. Samuel Spangler, a tele phone lineman, reported finding a fifty pound steel piece on the Missouri and Northern Arkansas railway tracks near Harrison Arkansas with grease spotted along both sides. In England seven workers died and one hundred were injured when a work train was struck at Gravesend station.
Four women and two men who abducted and whipped Miss Hallie Hinkle last Thursday are identified and slated for arrest today. All are tied to the garment workers strike. Local plants involved in the disorder were closed today.
The steamship Lake Stryman, a Clyde Steamship Company freighter, is on fire off the North Carolina coast. Wireless advices say the blaze is under control and the vessel is steering toward Charleston, due to arrive at 3 o clock tomorrow morning. it operates on the Boston Charleston Jacksonville run.
