William J. Gerry Marchbank of Monroe was named executive director of North Delta Regional Planning and Development District Inc. He has served as law enforcement planner since 1970 and will assume duties Sept. 1. The district covers 11 parishes in Northeast Louisiana and includes 31 member communities. Marchbank, 39, native of Denver, educated at University of Oklahoma and Northeast Louisiana University, previously directed campus security at NLU.
Tropical storm Dottie moved parallel to the Atlantic coast with a hurricane watch in effect from Jacksonville Florida to Cape Hatteras North Carolina. Forecaster Neil Frank warned of possible slight intensification toward hurricane strength with rough seas and beach erosion risks.
Consumer prices rose five tenths of a percent in July led by gasoline and medical care costs. Food prices rose modestly as overall inflation remained stable, with year over year gains easing to 5.4 percent. Gasoline up 1.5 percent and medical care up 1.1 percent drove the increase.
Local 648 AFL-CIO policemen meet at 4 p.m. at Monroe Police Department to discuss contract requests. The city’s contract expires Sept. 1 while Mayor W. J. Howard says a raise was requested but not promised.
