In camp Polk Louisiana an army test of a new destroyer force or D F used by the Third army proved highly capable of striking at enemy tank spearheads. Three mobile D F groups were ordered for inter army games next month as Major General Daley led a preliminary test with 37 and 75 mm cannons and accompanying infantry engineers air and armored cars blasting converging tanks, leaving crews in disarray.
In New York a terror scare faded after police found over 100 similar metal cylinders aboard the Cuba Line cargo ship Panuco after a Brooklyn pier blaze. Initial reports described bombs but tests showed they may be cargo or ship equipment, during a probe into a $1.59 million fire that killed at least five and injured 72.

Canadian Prime Minister W L Mackenzie King lands in Britain aboard a Liberator bomber to confer with Prime Minister Churchill and war leaders. He travels with Norman A Robertson Brigadier General George P Vanier and three secretaries. He will inspect Canadian forces and meet in London for war coordination discussions.
A Panair do Brasil airliner crashed on a mountainside near Sao Paulo killing eight and injuring two. Three survivors, two Americans Professor Philip C. Jessup and Hugh Davies and steward David Novak, slept through the crash and escaped death, later aiding in rescues with minor injuries.
Karl W. Thalhammer a 60 year old photo graphic equipment maker sues to annul his July 20 marriage to Esther Schliesser 16 at Yuma Arizona claiming they wed after her parents accused him of an affair. He vows divorce if annulment denied and says they separated after 11 days. Mrs Schliesser and her daughter plan a cross complaint for divorce and alimony saying the marriage was agreed to at the request of Thalhammer a family friend.
President Roosevelt, citing Lincoln in a 1862 moment, says the United States faces a long road through 1943 if needed to defeat the axis. He urged Americans to grasp the scale of the task ahead as press conference remarks echo wartime risk and resolve.
London reports the Royal Air Force dropped a new artificial leg near St Omer for Wing Commander Douglas Bader, whose squadron crossed the channel to share the honor. The legless ace, held prisoner after being shot down nine days earlier, had one leg destroyed in the crash. A spare leg was available from the original maker, who had fitted Bader before.
Massed Soviet tanks thrust across the lower Dnieper as Red Army units withdraw in good order. Five Russian villages are reported recaptured while new German advances near Leningrad are admitted. Novgorod sees heavy fighting as Berlin predicts Odessa may fall. Britain and Russia mobilize near Iran and air raids hit northern Germany. Detroit's streetcar and bus system were halted by an A F L strike effective at 4 am. The dispute with C I O over bargaining rights and operations disrupted transportation for about 400 000 workers while Mayor Jeffries and police prepared for further developments.
Associated Press correspondent recounts a gathering of Royal Air Force pilots outside Lille in England to toast Dickie Lee, a young fighter who fought bravely over France and was killed yesterday. L P Milner announces Federal highway No 165 between Monroe and Alexandria is placed in the strategic military highway net and eligible for defense program funds. Six soldiers, absent without leave from various army posts for up to a year, were arrested by sheriff's deputies in Harlan County Kentucky. They await arrival of army officers. The arrests follow Captain Dallas Keller's report that 27 men from his unit were missing from Camp Shelby Mississippi.
Washington reports the public still has at least ten days of easy installment credit. The Federal Reserve Board favors a September 1 effective date for new restrictions, with a possible postponement to September 15 for industry plea. Rules would set minimum cash down payments and 18 month terms across major consumer items, with some exemptions for cash and regular charge accounts.

Jackson faced three counts and was released on 900 dollar bond, while the other suspect remained jailed with no bond set. The crackdown, begun two months prior with Police Chiefs Brantley and Caldwell at army officials’ request, targets all known houses with no location spared. Officers confirmed operation of the Jackson house at 1631 Breard Street and pledged continued prosecutions.
Washington reports defense program allocations and commitments surpassed 51 billion dollars with a potential second lend lease request pushing the total beyond 55 billion. Congress has appropriated over 37 billion for the army navy and other defense activities since July 1 1940 plus initial lend lease outlay and further authorizations for a two ocean navy.
