Thousands seek relief at sea resorts and rivers as London endures another scorching day. The sweltering heat pushes 99 degrees, with 21 deaths including suicides and drownings. Thames embankment fills, pubs chill beer, and many sleep outdoors or in gardens.
Milan August 20 A small steamer, seen hovering near the salvage ship Artiglio as it retrieves gold from the Egypt wreck near Brest, France, is suspected of pirate intent. Commander Quaglia has armed the 24 crew. about 250 pounds of gold are aboard in an armored cabin. The suspected vessel, like haddock boats from Newfoundland, has shadowed the Artiglio for days.
A local column returns with a quirky note from Dr. J W Williams in North Carolina and a tale of a jailed attorney’s hour of confusion at Ouachita parish courthouse. Also listed are birthdays for residents and a surprise visit from Marion Monk, former local pastor now in New Orleans.

After a year and a half idle, Monroe Louisiana Carbon company plant at Hancock between Swartz and Wham will reopen on or about September 1. About ten workers are being hired to restart production of Fumonex carbon black used in rubber heels soles and hoses. Output aims eight to ten thousand pounds daily with shipments to Akron Ohio and several Massachusetts shoe centers.
John D. Rockefeller Jr defied doctors orders and traveled from the east to Chicago to see his dying sister Edith Rockefeller McCormick. He arrived with wife and child as nieces from Switzerland and Connecticut attended the ailing matriarch. A written statement quoted him saying he came to Chicago due to her critical illness.
The Nassau county district attorney's office agreed to pause the trial of five policemen charged with first degree manslaughter in the death of Hyman Stark until Wednesday. Defense counsel George Morton Levy requested time to work on the medical angle of testimony. the motion was not opposed. The defendants are Deputy Chief Frank J. Tappen Detective Lieutenant Jesse Mayforth and Detectives Charles Wesser Harry Zander and Leslie Peargshall.
Capt J A Mollison delays continuation of his east to west solo Atlantic flight due to thick fog in St John New Brunswick. He plans to reach Montreal for the Canadian air carnival then proceed to New York before returning to Europe.
The Ouachita Valley council reports unusually high demand for Camp Ki-Ro-Li this summer under J. Nico ble White. Camp use has been constant, forcing denial of some applications. Troops from Lincoln and Morehouse held week long camps under their own leadership with no money paid, many supplying their own food.
Paris Aug 20 The court of appeals ruled Dr Paul Gorguloff guilty of the premeditated assassination of President Paul Doumer last May and sentenced him to die on the guillotine. Retrial was denied. His defense claimed mental irresponsibility at the time of the shooting.
In Natchez Mississippi on August 20 officers continued fingerprint analysis in the Miss Jane Merrill murder inquiry. Thertillon expert Maurice B. O Neil linked the bullets to a pistol taken from suspect George Pearles or Lawrence Williams who was killed resisting interrogation in Pine Bluff.
Valley Stream, N Y. Aug 20 The pair Frances Marsalis and Louise Thaden stretch the longest women's flight to a full week as they hit 124 hours in the air marking a new endurance record. Centerville, Miss residents plan a welcome for Marsalis upon their return after visiting for the funeral of her father in law Dr W T Marsalis.
Ohio Democrats packed into the baseball stadium to hear Franklin D. Roosevelt open his nationwide campaign in Columbus. Roosevelt and his wife and daughter were greeted by thousands while preparations aimed for a crowd possibly over 50 000. The speech was set for 4 p m Eastern. the trip followed Hoover’s acceptance address.
Coolest weather since summer hit Twin Cities as the 63 degree reading was recorded by weather recorder Miss Kate Key. Last night’s low tied July not August, with 70 degrees noted for a previous single lowest mark. Residents retrieved quilts and blankets, felt the breeze, and began planning fall clothing despite upcoming warm days.

Six persons say Warter Owens of Monroe, 22, an ex convict, helped Yarrell rob the Olla State bank of about $6,000 yesterday morning. Bank officials and witnesses identified Owens in the parish jail after viewing the suspect, while Owens denied involvement and claimed alibi at a beer joint.
The Commodities Finance corporation created this week to speed raw materials into finished goods filed Articles of Incorporation in Dover Delaware with a capital structure of ten shares at 100 dollars each while planning to raise 50 million dollars through bond sales to banks. Eugene Meyer of the Federal Reserve Bank and other New York leaders participated in the plan.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation announces the immediate creation of eight regional agricultural credit corporations to loan money for cattle feeders through the upcoming winter. Two more district bodies will follow in North and South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Indiana, with locations in Columbia and Newton.
