In Greenville Tennessee Bob Tipton aged 43 and Alma Tipton aged 40 pleaded not guilty at a preliminary hearing for the murder of 12 year old Novella Winkle whose mutilated body was found in the Tipton home cellar. Nearly two thousand people crowded the courtroom as twenty witnesses were examined at the hearing.
A Paris London passenger aircraft crashed in Romney Marshes Kent late today. One passenger was killed and nine seriously injured in the crash report.
New York August 18 The acting solicitor of the U S Customs House Edward S Barnes tentatively barred all foreign magazines containing liquor advertisements from entering the United States He singled out The Key to London England published for American tourists and shipped by express The ruling notes exceptions for foreign newspapers but treats The Key to London as a magazine thus blocking its import along with similar publications
Canton bootlegger Louis Mazer faces pressure as tensions rise between Canton investigators and U S District Attorney A E Bernsteen. Bernsteen withdraws from the murder probe into Don R Mellett and warns of leaks while fearing violence from Mazer's associates who may betray him. Norman Clark, a Canton lawyer, reports threats over talking about the murder and is questioned for information on bootleg operations and the murder plot.
Tom Armstrong was arrested at 1:30 pm and, after a quick arraignment, pled guilty to two burglary charges. Judge Percy Sandel sentenced him to seven to ten years in the state penitentiary for the West Monroe burglaries. He was captured after burglaries on August 10 and 14 involving barbers supplies and personal property.
