Seven people are arrested for disorderly conduct as protests surge near a Bristol residence. Police chief John R. Stewart seeks state protection amid feared violence. Defendant Myers vows to stay in his home with his wife Daisy and their three children, despite threats.
Ouachita River Valley Association reports a 10 percent rise in seven months 1957 shipping totaling 110 693 tons versus 108 857 tons in 1956. Commodities include Methanol Logs Liquid sulphur and more as four towing firms operate on the river amid plans for a nine foot channel and locks 525 feet long by 1961 potential annual traffic could reach one million tons.
In Angola Louisiana Joseph Sheffield died in the electric chair for the shotgun slaying of Deputy Sheriff John L. Waller. The 28 year old faced the execution calmly saying he held no grudges and requested the switch be pulled tight. He had been condemned 19 days after the June 14 1953 shooting.
Rep Lawrence Gibbs refuses to sign a routine resolution transferring $30,000 annual state road funds to Ouachita Parish police jury citing a lack of confidence in how the money is being spent. The $1,290,000 annual statewide maintenance appropriation funds parish roads with each parish receiving $30,000. Senate ally James Sparks and Rep Gilbert Faulk signed the parish resolution but Gibbs demands more detail on distribution before he will approve.
Speaker Rayburn predicted the civil rights bill would pass before Congress adjourns and signaled House action next week. He noted uncertain compromise details but said the Rules Committee could clear the bill soon and that both parties appear to favor a modified jury trial amendment.

Senate Republican leader Knowland met with President Eisenhower and said the Senate may restore a substantial part of the 800 million dollars cut by the House in the foreign aid bill. The House reduced the total to 3,191,810,000 with 2,524,760,000 new money and 67,050,000 carryovers. Mansfield predicted Senate action between 2.8 and 3.0 billion dollars.
