A derailment of train No. 38 east of Cheniere halted service between Monroe and Shreveport. The wreckage was cleared and the track repaired by Sunday. A fireman was seriously injured and three passengers, two of them Black women, were slightly bruised as passengers escaped injury in the Sunday wreck.
Turkmen began dam repairs at noon and later that day Train No. 102 derailed near Chenere station after a track failure. Fireman M M Holland suffered pelvis and rib injuries. three others—Gerthie Berry Jessie Tyler and ig Moore—were treated at St Francis Sanitarium. Conductor Lee and Engineer S D Gra of Shreveport led Train 38. no fatalities were reported.
An unexpected strike by longshoremen at the New York docks could cost the Erie Railroad about $100000 as 350 loads of perishable freight bound for fruit and vegetable dealers cannot be moved. Sixty percent of unloaded cars remained idle at the piers as 400 workers refused to board, and only 200 reported for work. Unionized strikers seek higher wages while nonunion men ask 75 cents an hour for ten hours and 110 cents for overtime, against a prevailing 52 to 78 cents rate.
The North Louisiana Press association met in Minden for its first annual convention. C E Faulk was elected president with David W Thomas as vice president and Isaac Chapman as secretary treasurer. Delegates condemned government competition in printing and publishing and chose Monroe as next meeting venue.
Reports say two prisoners escaped from Ferriday jail during Sunday night. The men identified are J. D. Haygood and Arthur Johnson. Haygood, 19, 115 pounds, blond hair, wearing cap and corduroy trousers. Johnson, 6 foot 1, mustache, broken front tooth, wearing cap and overalls.
In New Orleans on August 16 a small radio tube the size of a phonograph needle was found in debris after passing through an incinerator. The item, recovered today, suggests debris survived the furnace in a routine cleanup.
Pola Negri, star and admitted fiancée of Rudolph Valentino, expressed profound shock upon learning in New York of his illness. She plans to visit him in about ten days amid reports he is hospitalized and in uncertain condition.
Rudolph Valentino known as the sheik of films underwent an emergency operation at Polythinae hospital after collapsing in his Hotel Ambassador apartment. Doctors removed his appendix and a gastric ulcer and officials say he is out of danger and doing well.
Wyoming's biennial primary opened with minimal contests and little public interest. Governor Nellie Taylor Ross seeks renomination without opposition. Congressman-at-large Charles E. Winter faces no primary challenge. The main GOP race is between Frank E. Lucas and Francis C. Emerson for governor with Emerson endorsed by the state convention.
In San Angel a clash between police and Catholics left injured as authorities searched for arms amid rumor of an armed uprising. Police fired warning shots and clubs were used. several Catholic leaders were arrested including Father Octavano Rodriguez. Attendance at cinemas has fallen 50 to 75 percent due to an economic boycott.
The Supreme Lodge of the Knights of Pythias voted to recognize the Princess of Syracuse as a junior order named the Pythian prince. The fraternity targets boys aged 14 to 21 and was organized in 1928 by Franklin Butler in Chicago.
Cloudy weather with possible showers faces Mississippi voters in tomorrow's Democratic primary. Four Congressmen and seven circuit judges along with county judges are to be nominated, with nomination meaning election. Polls open 7 AM. closing time not stated. Key races include J W Collier versus Francis Harmon in the eighth district and W M Whittington against W Y Humphreys in the third district.
In Canton Ohio the U S government plans a major strike against the local underworld and liquor rings. A federal warrant is expected to name a man said to know much about the murder of Canton publisher Don R Mellett, a noted underworld leader who is believed connected to the crime. The arrest aims to clear up the publisher’s killing and disrupt Canton’s liquor operations.
Judge A W Agler charged the Stark county grand jury to study the Mellett murder case and its causes within two weeks. He urged impartial jurors to pursue justice over punishing officials and warned against malice or fear shaping indictments. Prosecutor McClintock cited alleged attempts to thwart justice and libelous reports as part of the probe.
Mrs. R. L. Thomas aged about 33 wife of prominent Bastrop hard merchant was struck by a car driven by Albert Anderson 17 of Bastrop in front of her home. She was taken to Riverside Canitar ium for treatment and an X ray exam was planned to assess injuries. No arrest reported.
D. J. Stern, 43, auditor and bookkeeper for Blumberg Mercantile of Lake Charles, collapsed and died on a Bastrop street during a sales rounds with A M Brown of Monroe and J P McGough of West Monroe. The death appeared due to heart failure. His wife was not present at the time.
Two discoveries report ancient buried cities in Mexico. A Maya city was found near Santa Elisán in Chiapas by a government scientific party. Another city is said to have been found on a ranch near Jute Puca in Guerrero.
In Whitstable England two men clash over a woman. Alphonse Austin Smith and John Thomas Derham fight at Stella Maris Villa leaving Derham fatally shot and Smith injured. Derham is dying from a gunshot wound while Smith is recovering at Maidstone jail. jealousy is cited as the motive.
Byron and William Dunn of Lake Charles appeal their murder case to the U S Supreme Court for review after being sentenced to hang for the killing of two prohibition agents in New Orleans.
About 160 men mobilized for a Mexican revolt under General Enrique Estrada were jailed in San Diego after authorities seized an armored vehicle and two truckloads of rifles, machine guns, and ammunition. Agents captured Estrada and aide Earle C. Parker, with more prisoners sent to Fort Rosecrans. arms included 400 Springfield rifles and 155000 rounds.
Courageous guard Harry Brown a Black man prevented escape when three prisoners at Cook County Jail sawed through a wall and overpowered a guard. Prisoners Daniel McGeoghegan awaiting execution and two others were returned to cells while Angie Caggino escaped briefly before being recaptured.
