The White River Valley Herald criticizes a rising anti Communist mood in Randolph Center Vermont warning that a witch hunt would harm community life. The editorial labels several locals as known in the movement and argues anyone unwilling to testify should leave town.
Baton Rouge attorney Theo Cangelosi said a proposed extension of officials terms would be submitted to a vote. He spoke to launch a campaign for a constitutional convention call to be voted on November 7, with the process to consider extending terms for state and local officials and possibly bypass the 500,000 voter threshold. Cangelosi cited legislative support and urged delegates to submit the question to the people.

Detroit August 15 A walkout by 8 000 Packard workers ends two months of peace in the auto industry as the U A W strikes over pensions insurance and cost of living pay increase. The union set a midnight deadline after negotiations with a federal mediator aided. Packard accuses the union of a pressure move while offering a wage rise and a new pension plan plus insurance and other concessions.
Baton Rouge Aug 15 The state board of education ordered presidents of state colleges and heads of special schools to justify any proposed salary increases in next years budgets and delayed approval of the spending plans. Board president George Madison charged the college leaders with responsibility for the move.
State board of education in Baton Rouge did not act on appointing a president for Northeast Louisiana State College at the morning session. Officials say the presidents of Northeast and two other state colleges are expected to be named this afternoon.
In a meeting audience member criticizes budget increases for teachers and staff including maids and charges the district with neglecting maintenance. The speaker demands that information be submitted within 15 days.
In Los Angeles on August 15 Penny Clark, seven, was struck and killed crossing a street by driver Edward Cheetham. Penny’s nurse reported calling to her, but the child did not hear. Nedra Clark, widow of singer Buddy Clark, has endured three major losses including Buddy’s fatal plane crash on October 1.
In Baton Rouge on August 15 crews aboard two air force cargo ships walked off the vessels over payment of transportation costs. The ships Peconia and Muir Woods fly under civilian crews contracted by T. Smith and Son. The Muir Woods is en route from Houston to Savannah, while the Peconia, from Newfoundland, heads to Lake Charles.
Washington reports the Senate Finance Committee weighing a 1951 super tax on war inflated incomes and possible excess profits tax on corporations. Options studied include a national sales tax or transactions tax and new excises on non essential goods to curb buying. The committee also considers delaying any excess profits tax and prepares staff proposals for an effective January 1, 1951 start.
A crippled B 29 bomber from Barksdale Air Force Base crashed in a field near Fort Worth on August 15 killing four crewmen and injuring eight. The plane, attempting to land at Carswell Air Force Base, plowed and burned over about a half mile near residential areas. three bodies were recovered from the nose section and one from the center. Among the dead are Capt Bernard J McKenna Staten Island NY and First Lt Michael J Joyce Arlington MA. the fourth victim’s name was withheld pending kin notification. Injured include Capt Robert A Dibbell Allen town PA and Capt Richard W Swanson Cleveland OH. other survivors are listed with various ranks and hometowns.
Herbert Zyduck, 43, of Merrill Wisconsin, left for Mercer on July 7 and was found near Lac du Flambeau in the Wisconsin northwoods in a half conscious, starved state. He weighs about 100 pounds, down from 165, and is the father of five. He did not speak as he was transported to a hospital. Police investigate the disappearance.

Tokyo Aug 15 official bulletin identifies Fifteen Communist divisions totaling about 150000 men in and around the south Korean front. It lists opposing UN units along the front from Yongdok to Chinju with forces from South Korea United States and unidentified units and notes further UN forces undisclosed for security.
Tokyo reports say North Korea set September 1 as the deadline to complete conquests in the south as Allied forces tighten the clock. North Korean premier Kim Il Sung warned troops to drive out U S and South Korean forces within 16 days, while clashes around Taegu and Naktong river tests patience and defense positions.
San Francisco August remarks from Fleet Admiral Nimitz and Admiral Halsey urged firm action to check Communist aggression in Korea and warned that World War III could follow if the UN effort fails. They spoke at the National Convention of the Disabled American Veterans.
Red troops with tanks burst from Changnyong to seven miles east of the Naktong river, overrun segments of the U S 24th infantry division, and push toward Taegu as heavy fighting rages along the Changnyong front. A field dispatch notes deep Red penetration and allied efforts to blunt the advance.
Rep. John R. Walsh failed to appear for the start of today’s House session leaving in doubt the fate of a bill to revoke a postal service order. The bill’s fate hinges on Walsh who called the petiti on to bypass the rules committee and who must call up the measure today. If he is absent the bill will be dropped from the calendar and could return only if new petitions or a rules committee reversal occur.
Miami. A Atlantic hurricane stalled about 800 miles from Miami with 100 mph winds around its center. Forecaster Grady Norton said the storm has halted and may intensify while remaining offshore. Navy hurricane hunter reports and no land warnings. Gale winds cover 150 miles, rain increasing. Position at 9 a.m. near 25 N, 67 W.
Early morning flames leveled a downtown paper plant and threatened a chemical laboratory. Firemen controlled the general alarm blaze in about 30 minutes with 15 pieces of equipment. The Robins Sabins Paper Co. plant was destroyed, with losses estimated at 75 000 dollars.
